This is the world's smallest MacBook Pro (also known as the Macbook Mini). This DIY mini laptop build features a light-up Apple logo on the back of the screen. MagSafe power adapter/charger, and a USB 3.0 port! What more could you ask for? This DIY laptop build has been one of the more challenging projects I've undertaken due to how compact/small all of the parts were.
Benchmark: It runs Minecraft and Chrome without issue. :-)
Parts: I used a Raspberry Pi 4 to power this build and iRaspbian for the OS.

Coming from UKposts home feed recommendations, I find it INCREDIBLY weird how you just cut and destroy the connectors instead of removing them correctly.
@J0ermungand
@J0ermungand 3 роки тому
I can't quite put my finger on the why, but your removal process feels like obliteration. :P My top suggestion: get a hot air soldering/desoldering station. Makes removing unwanted surface mount components that much easier and cleaner. The cheaper wireless keyboards most often have a separate touchpad module, which would've let you put the touchpad in the proper place for this build.

A probably easier trick to eliminate screw heads is one that Apple uses on many of their products: magnets. Mount a magnet on a boss in the case, mount another on the faceplate, snap it in place, and it will never fall off, but will be easy to service.

I have an older Chromebook with useless specs but gorgeous screen 1080p and surprisingly great speakers, I found your video searching for a way to replace the internals with a raspberry pi 4 o other better hardware, it would be a great build video for you as there is a ton of these devices around catching dust. Mine is a Toshiba Chromebook 2 cb35, besides the horsepower it's a great device, would be a shame to discard it.

I like the build overall but was a dremel really the best tool for slimming things down? Surely a $20 hot air station would do a much better job.
@MichaelPick
@MichaelPick 3 роки тому
That might be a good option! I tried de-soldering the HDMI port on a screen for this video, and totally destroyed the traces underneath it, so that’s why I opted for the Dremel, as I could control exactly what material I removed. But a hot air station might be a good option!

Another trick that Apple used on the MacBook Air models, was making the case wedge-shaped, so the front edge, which is what people see the most of, is much thinner than the rear, where all of the electronics is.

This is quite a beautiful build. That transparent Apple must be a head-turner. Seems like it would almost make it worthwhile to go to Starbucks just to whip that out and fire it up! And making a plate with holes for the keys was truly going beyond the call - most of us would have just made a hole that they whole keyboard sticks through. I just bought a 7" display to build into something like this. By shopping around a little, I was able to find one that had very little that needs to be removed - just the HDMI, the MicroUSB, and a switch for the backlight. No standoffs, no buttons. I DO have to cut off the mounting tabs, though. No biggie - those cutoff wheels are my most-often-used tool for the Dremel. I was considering replacing the double USB connectors with single ones (didn't even think of just cutting off the top ones!), but instead I have decided to make the case roughly the layout of the original Toshiba 1100 laptop, which will give the Pi and the batteries space behind the hinge all to themselves rather than having to stack anything at all on top of the Pi. (The batteries are from a torn-down 10 A*hr power bank, which has four 18650 cells.) In principle, this should allow me to make the whole thing less than an inch thick when closed, because the display closes over the keyboard, which will be not much thicker than yours. Also, I'll be using the touchscreen as my main pointing device, allowing me to use larger keys on a 50% keyboard with 17mm keys. I'll be going a little wider than your case, since it will be the keyboard dictating the width rather than the display, so the overall footprint will be larger than yours - I'm looking at about 210mm wide x 180mm deep x 25mm tall (8.25" x 7" x 1"). We each have our own preferences - I like to think of Pi builds ("cyberdecks", mini-laptops, bug-out box builds, whatever) as being the technician's equivalent to a Jedi knight's light saber. Again, awesome, inspirational build.
