This is truly one of the best songs to come out this month in Kpop. Gfriend has really mastered the art of making pop songs that are not only meaningful but also surprising. Let me tell you why. As a songwriter this song adds a fresh take to the standard pop song form. Most pop songs go verse/pre-chorus/chorus and then repeat that. In each of these sections the melody will usually repeat over and over just with different lyrics. Or the melody will change slightly. However Gfriend has managed to fit so many melodies in this song and it works. When I was listening to this song and trying to learn it I was trying to realize why I was having such a hard time. It is because this song is deceptive in the best way. At first it seems like the melody is easy and catchy but then you realize there is more going on then you think. Take first verse for example. I'll write it romanized so everyone can read it. meolliseo deullyeowa dalkomhan soksagim iri wa Ah ah jeori ga bwa Ah ah Glitter in the air jubyeone banjjagineun modeun ge nal ikkeureo dae Those first two lines establish the main verse melody and lyric rhythm. The standard is to repeat that in the next two lines. And we we hear "glitter in the air" we hear that so we think they will do that. But as soon as we get to "banjjagineun" they switch up the rhythm and melody completely. They throw us a curve ball and give the verse some instability. But they follow that up with this really stable and standard section, bicheul ttara georeo hollin deushi chulgu eomneun miro sogeseo Oh won’t you wake up Oh you’d better wake up nareul ttara geonneun geurimjaga soricheo nal samkiryeo hane Oh won’t you wake up Oh you’d better wake up In this section they do exactly what we expect. The first 4 line establish the melody and rhythm and they just repeat it for the next set of 4 lines. Because they give us a surprising verse followed by a standard verse it works. It gives us enough variation to be interested, but it still fits the easy listening style of pop music. And they use these kinds of techniques all throughout the song. I could go on but I don't want to make this comment too long. I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this. Any other writers, singers, or music lovers in the comments let me know if you agree with my analysis. I'd love to hear your thoughts on why this song works so well.
