Cork is boiled also to kill the molds. Molds are the thing that makes wine "taste of cork". The charateristics that make the cork interesting for construction industry are that it's lightweight, insulating and FIRE RESISTANT. Cork doesn't burn.

I once worked on a cork harvest. I just stacked the cork that was cut by the master harvesters, so I was a simple cork stacker. Then I put it in sacks. I was now a cork sacker. Then I worked inside where the cork was soaked.

The video doesn't indicate where the cork was harvested, but I believe it was in Portugal and Spain. I traveled through this region and saw numbers on the various cork trees. I was told that the number, if for example is 3, the cork on this number 3 tree will be harvested the next time a 3 shows up, i.e. 13, 23, 33, 43, etc.

cork is very garbage as it comes from trees, it is better to make plastic corks these days that are easily removable... it safes the nature and can even recycle if you put it in the cork bin or the plastic bin lol. in dutch we have the plastic bin but not the cork one though..
