I had a rich friend in college, this really happened... “You should get into motor-paragliding, it’ll only cost $15k for the equipment and I’ll teach you how.” “I don’t have $15k, and if I did I have other things I need.” “You mean you don’t want to?” “No, I just cant afford it.” “You know what, I’ll sell you my old equipment for $10k.” “I don’t have $10k either 😂” “Really? That’s too bad it’s really awesome.” The sad part was he wasn’t being sarcastic or trying to sell me stuff, he just had no idea how much $10k was to a not trust-fund baby.

David Wolf Honestly it's the girls paying their own way. Saving up from well paid jobs they obtained after four plus years of college and ditching free loaders. As the great prophets T.L.C. once said, "Nay, I don't want no scrub..."
@davidvondoom2853
@davidvondoom2853 9 років тому
Anthony Duran No, those are 'women' doing those things. 'Girls' don't do that at all. They depend on men for most things, so that they don't have to grow up. When looking at profiles there are little red flags I see, that tell me that a girl is immature and a mooch. Things like, "I like to go on road trips" and yet it sates that she doesn't have a car. Or, "I like quadding, boating and horseback riding" yet she doesn't own any of those things. It says she has expensive tastes, that she can't afford, and is looking for a man who will pay for those things for her. She wants a sugar daddy and if your cash runs out, she'll loose interest. Girls like that aren't worth the time, if you're looking for something serious. If you're not and you don't mind paying for a girl's time, then go ahead and continue to teach girls they can objectify men for their money and never have to grow up. No one likes a leech and a user. When I look at a woman's profile and see her list of interests, I want to see things she actually does, on her own, not a wish list of things she wants to do, if only someone would pay her way. That's a red flag, in my book.

I use to envy people like the girl in this video so much back in college (when was poor), but now that I have the money to travel and have done a lot of traveling to other countries I can honestly say... Traveling is over hyped! It's more about the company that you keep than it is about the actual location. I would rather travel to a broke town in the U.S with fun people than to travel to Paris alone or with someone who is unadventurous.
@huyla1472
@huyla1472 5 років тому
I feel like it's more of the purpose you're travelling for. You could travel alone, but it would still be fun if you were to learn new things, I mean like actual bizarre things that you've never seen or heard from anywhere or anyone in your life. Paris, for example, would be really dull because it's a mainstream tourist spot, mostly containing pretentious travelers who act as if they're there to learn but could give two shits about its history and lifestyle, which also makes the locals become really unfriendly to foreigners. Go somewhere exotic my dude, somewhere you feel as far from your culture as possible, but make sure to plan it properly before you do

@@huyla1472 Yes! I find traveling alone to be way more educational, but you have to plan ahead of time. The more you know ahead beforehand the richer your experience will be (and the more you'll be able to fit into your trip). Fun adventures aren't just going to happen to you, but you'll have way more quiet and time to be really observant of the life going on around you, and you'll be able to go to way more places you want to go to. Traveling with good friends is a great and fun adventure, but it's really more about your experience as a group. You'll (ideally) have a blast and make great memories and deepen your connections with those people, but it's really more about you and your friends than the place you're going.

I don't need money to pay for it "It doesn't matter where you go, as long as you broaden your horizon".......... If I don't know where I'm going, how will I get back?? I have bills to pay "Everyone can travel, people are just to scared to try"............. people have jobs that pay for their houses..... and food...... and people have families that they need to provide for........ children to raise......... "Just set yourself free and-" OKAY SHUT UP!!! Stop bragging about how great your life is cuz you just look and sound spoiled!!

@thequpoiu6552
@thequpoiu6552 5 років тому
+ MegaMementoMori I'm not an "in the moment" kind of guy. I actually like planning for my long-term future, retiring early and comfortably. Unlike you, I spent the majority of the first two decades of my life with poverty's guillotine over my head. For years, I was very close to living in the streets. No amount of prioritizing and smart spending and saving would've put me in any position of privilege. And now, with ailing parents and dying grandparents needing my attention, a significant portion of my salary goes to paying for their hospital bills, medications, the whole nine yards, while I'm still dealing with my own problems. There isn't a court that judges how I live my life. There's nobody I have to impress. I like smelling the roses and appreciating the people at home. I haven't failed to realize there's nothing wrong with living a small, albeit fulfilling life. Reality check: nobody has to go through grandiose moments to learn important lessons. For someone so "worldly", you're still ignorant about the simple things. The basics. Pompous and superficial describe you best. Life's not a competition. I've seen kids learn that lesson better than you. Sit your ass on a high horse, at least back it up.
@MegaMementoMori
@MegaMementoMori 5 років тому
the qupoiu I agree, planning is essential. But, you see, smart spending and saving won't get you anywhere. You need to get the money - and that is where the planning should come in. If you analysed your best career opportunities, you would not be living the majority of your 20's in poverty - at most until you graduated collage. If there is nobody you have to impress, if you don't feel the urge to make your parents proud of you, get into social spheres filled with successful people or get the girl of your dreams... are you sure that you do not want to impress yourself? Having the ability to look back on your life and say that it was flipping awesome is a really good feeling. When you will _retire_ - do you want to have the reflection that you spent 60 years smelling roses, looking at people and getting by? I am in my (unfortunately) late 20's and when I remember my life, I see alpine snow escaping from my skis, water rushing from beneath my wakeboard, glorious monuments and charming cities from all around Europe just waiting for me to take a picture. I gaze upon thousands miles of road as I cruised from Nordcapp to Gibraltar. I hear my friends exchanging tales of other wild adventures over a pint of beer from a local brewery that we probably saw first and last time before going to yet uncharted places. Pompous and superficial? Maybe. But I would not trade my grandiose moments for all the important lessons in the world. There are lessons best not learned - the ones that do not give you an advantage. If you think that life is not a competition, you are fooling yourself. Life was a competition from the moment of it's conception. But there are times where I like to have a break from this rat race (and, in a sense, reap the rewards of victory), and this is when I travel.
@thequpoiu6552
@thequpoiu6552 5 років тому
I've accomplished everything I set out for myself to get out of poverty and now have my attention on taking care of the family that helped me. They're beyond proud! After all the shit life put me in, I've got nothing left to prove to anybody. There's not a one-size-fits-all method of fulfillment, so my priorities in life aren't yours. I'm too busy getting the best out of it on my own terms with the people in my community I've made good with. That's the key to happiness. You're nobody to judge and compare. If you look down on me, you look down on everything and everybody that made me who I am. When you talked about my career? How misinformed. I've been a nurse informatics specialist since 25. I make good money now. Back to different life priorities. Supposedly, traveling humbles people, makes them more considerate and better all-around than they were. You wasted all that time and money if you still dismiss anyone for approaching life differently. Back to the basics. And you misunderstood "competition", son. "Competition" not in the sense of survival, but in the sense of romanticizing things. Being a self-important fame whore and everything else along those lines. Good on you for experiencing what you have, but I've met my share of travelers with thick passports and narrow minds. That's expected of immature people, though.
@MegaMementoMori
@MegaMementoMori 5 років тому
It seems that there was a misunderstanding. Your first statement seemed like you were poor when you were younger and now you have reached some financial level that would afford you a modest life if you did not have to pay for your family's health expenses, and your ambition is only to keep this level until and after retirement. The only thing I was being judgemental about was this supposed lack of ambition to strive for more - what you described as a small yet fulfilling life. I do not consider having a successful career and pursuing the things you enjoy a small life. The only difference between us is that travelling is the thing I enjoy, while you prefer other undisclosed things in your community. On the basic level, our value systems don't differ that much. I too believe that family is the key. The thing is that, when they were younger, my parents did incredible things to secure a better future for their family. They have succeeded and finances aren't a problem for us. Now I am acting on the plan to get an even better future for the kids that I will have. I am an international lawyer and the majority of my journeys were linked to improving my career - I have studied a semester in Finland and worked in a Spanish law firm, which got me into one of the most prestigious law firms in my city. Now I plan to make an LLM in the States to continue this trajectory. At the same time, I enjoy life to the fullest because this is what I want my kids to do once I start my own family and are making equal and more money then my parents. But tell me, why do you assume that travelling was a way to get fame or attention or, weirder still, to "grow as a person"? Both I and most people I've met travel for the experiences - to get an adrenaline rush and to see the awesomeness of our planet. And furthermore, what gives you the right to decide what makes a person "better all-around"? I have humble friends and proud friends - I do not think that either of these qualities makes them better, just different. Travel simply gets you more experiences, but I agree that other forms of past-time do that as well.

Actually America is culturally MUCH more similar than the countries of Europe. You have the same stores, same American culture, same language, same hobbies. There are minor differences if you go to the extreme places, but most of America is now a bland, boring, homogeneous suburbia. Given Boston is a bit different from the small mountain towns of East Kentucky, but not as different as London is from Moscow. I'm an American and I've traveled to a few other countries. My friend's dad lives in Switzerland. This christmas their family is going on vacation in Spain (she's Swedish) but she doesn't want to come with, so he's bribing her with a brand new laptop he'll buy for her if she comes with... I ain't complaining though because they brought me on a trip to 4 different countries last summer and I basically didn't have to pay for anything. Heheh

I travel all the time. It isn't as expensive as it seems. Road trips and sleeping in my car has allowed me to see every state in the US (and provinces in Canada with roads), except obviously Hawaii, which was a bit expensive. When I go abroad, obviously the flights are expensive, but renting a car and sleeping in it isn't. People who never leave their town are bound to have a smaller world view. It isn't necessary to go to Bali, but it is a necessity to at least leave your city. NYC and LA aren't the center of the world. Also, when going to college, and getting jobs, make a point of having them in different places than where you were raised. For example, I was raised in the MidWest. I joined the Marines which brought me to the West Coast, and million other places. I lived in the South for awhile after getting out. Now, I'm going to college in New England. I'd like to go to medical school in the northwest (assuming I get in to those schools) because it is the only region that I've been to, but haven't lived. These aren't exactly "traveling," but they open up opportunities for 200 miles day and weekend trips in the region and over time, allows one to see lots of places. Whenever I live somewhere new, I literally get out a compass (the one that draws), and draw a 200 mile circumference around the area I live and make a point to see as much of it as I can.

I think the point of the video is that many people are poor and have financial and personal responsibilities that prevent them from taking time off work. It's not so much that they can't afford to go somewhere, but they can't afford to stop working. Whether you have kids or elderly parents to take care of, rent or mortgages to pay, student debts, car debts (because in a Catch-22 you needed a decent car in order to work and now you need the job in order to pay the car), business loans, or simply plans to grow your business, it's hard to take more than a couple weeks off a year.

I wish. I struggle to pay for the everyday bus to go to college and back. lmao. People's realities are different, bruh. Also I've met people who have been to everywhere in the world and it's still pretty closed minded and I've met people who never left their hometown and have a wide perspective of the world so calm down.

Nope, inaccurate, she did not give anyone a souvenir (like a shirt) from the place they travelled so that you have to wear the shirt, and then people ask you if you have been there, you say no, and they all give you a judging look.

Yeah, I often check out of group conversations when they start waxing nostalgic about their extensive traveling experience then look at me like I have a nipple on my forehead when I say I’ve only been to the Caribbean once and Tijuana.

Living in Germany rules sometimes. Studying is cheap af, you get 20 paid days of by law and it's located in the middle of Europe which means driving usually doesn't take that long.

In all seriousness though, often people are "too poor to travel" because they have different priorities. I personally spend ALL of my money on "necessities" (rent, food, transportation to work) and travel. I never eat out, I don't have a car, I'll walk for an hour instead of taking the bus, I don't go to concerts or bars or the cinema, I don't buy junk food or books... everything I want in this world is to travel. Yes, I may be in Turkey, then in Iceland, then in Taiwan, but that's because I save and save and save and travel is my life. Not everyone *wants* to travel if that means giving up on other things they enjoy doing with their money and time. And when I'm abroad, I'm sleeping in hostel dormitories, waking up at 4am to start the hike up a mountain so I don't have to pay for the ropeway, I don't buy souvenirs... it's often simply about priorities. If you have 10 days off and decide to go to 3 weddings, that's great, but it's your *choice* to do that, don't pretend you don't have the time when you've made the decision to go to the weddings *instead of* travel. I wouldn't go to the weddings, that's why I have time to travel. And if you really want to travel but seriously don't have the time and money, travel around your own country! You don't have to go to the other side of the world to see interesting things. Or find ways to experience different cultures within your city (foreign restaurants, learn a new language, get to know the expat community for when you do go abroad you'll have friends to stay with, go to expositions and events related to other countries...).

My friend who went on a trip across europe and the middle east told me: “we’re not rich, we just find good deals.” I asked her dad how much it would be just to go to the Middle East and he told me $10,000. That’s my tax return for the next decade and a half.

While I grant you that people really lack empathy, you too must understand that emotional pain is a really relative thing. That's why many famous people kill themselves, despite having adoring fans and lots of money. I think the best you can do is to aspire to be the best person you can be, and not give a fuck about the rest.

Shit. Epiphany. People who do not travel probably do not really want to here about my latest trip, even when they specifically ask about it. Maybe I should just say, "You did not miss anything. What have you been up to?" Then no one will hate me in jealously.
