Change the story, you change the reality, and actual social change can then occur.
@terry_the_terrible
@terry_the_terrible 2 місяці тому
You're describing propaganda. Social change occurs when there's sacrifice, compromise and promises. With a dash of second and third place teaming up against the more destructive first place candidate because stability is better than ideology. Stories change all the time and people already seek the stories that are the most comforting for themselves. There's no magic bullet, no easy solution. There's just putting effort into relationships and yes, sometimes this is too expensive for some and it's easier to just obliterate one side completely and then heavily peddling the story that the losers were subhuman. Which is what is happening right now in Gaza.

@agilemind6241
@agilemind6241 2 місяці тому
@@terry_the_terrible Propaganda absolutely is effective in enacting social change. The question is simply: who gets to write the story? If you let rich oligarchs write the story you get Russia, If you let megacorporations and business millionaires write the story you get the USA, If you let unions write the story you get France, If you let the people write the story you get Switzerland, If you let a single political party write the story you get China, If you let theo/ethno-nationalists write the story you get Israel... etc... Compromise does not work, because whichever side of the compromise is most resistant to compromising will achieve more of their goals than the side more willing to compromise, which creates a cycle of less and less compromise - it's the Prisoner's Dilemma. You can see it in effect in the USA today. Sacrifice can help change the story, because it demonstrates how much you believe in your story which can be persuasive to people since most people don't believe as strongly in their story as you are in yours depending on the extent of your sacrifice. But it alone does nothing, just look at Aaron Bushnell (RIP), did the US government change it's stance because of his sacrifice? Promises are far too narrow for most people to care about for more than a few months, they get broken all the time for all kinds of different reasons. Promises are temporary ways to convince people to work together, but they don't last beyond a predefined scope. If you want someone to work with you in the long term, you need to convince them to believe the same stories as you. Since you brought up Gaza, nothing will change in the Israel-Palestine situation until Israel changes their story from "This is our land, we turned it from mud huts into a thriving modern country because we are smarter and more industrious that those living here before", to "We colonized this land by exiling & murdering millions of people (which has left them poor and resentful), and are only able to build & protect our homes thanks to international financing from Europe & the USA." Because in the former there is no reason for them to reconcile with the Palestinians, so they won't do so.

I completely agree. The Colbert one was a bit surprising because he is a bright guy. Ronnie is just a clown. That's his job so it's fine. I think intelligent people have trouble with Yuval because he tells the simple truth that most everything we fill our days with is made up nonsense that divides us arbitrarily and at any time we could stop believing it and make a better world. Colbert didn't like it because it because to accept the idea of everything being stories we tell ourselves would be to admit Catholicism is a con. Colbert isn't ready to admit that yet.

Thank you for your comments, I had a similar experience and thought I would see that reflected more in the commentary. I haven’t seen Colbert’s interview and now won’t. The level of boorishness and immaturity in ronnie‘s interview style here was so disappointing, not least because it continued to interrupt Yuval’s fascinating ideas (isn’t HIM talking about the book the very reason he’s on there?) i’m OK with that being an affect of the more one-dimensional comedic skits, but I hope for a lot more in this kind of interview. Ronnie did a great job, striking the balance between sincerity, humor, and respect when he did the piece with the Chinatown interviews in response to Fox News’ ridiculousness.

You are so intelligent, Ronny, that being mean sparkles a chance to ponder on reality for those who might be interested. Wonderful interview. You have an equally illuminated counterpart. I’m using this video for my English class; sick of the propaganda text book I’m compelled to use by the university I work for. Hi from Baja California Sur (not Cabo). Soy mexicana.

Finally, explaining the reasons why we do things....biology....not religion, not culture, just plain biology (here, couched in "history").
@MsLemon42
@MsLemon42 2 місяці тому
Culture is also regional, and that’s a relationship with how our ancestors dealt with the physical geography. In some cases, small biological changes happened.
@walkingstick6655

@@MsLemon42 I should have been more accurate, it's a combination of evolution and biology. Region can account for some degree of evolution.

There's a GREAT documentary that goes into detail about this (and why companies load their products with fat/sugar/salt). It's called "Food Inc." I think it's on youtube.UKposts. (yep, just checked)

If you haven't heard of it yet, you might be interested in the "biopsychosocial model" which helps to explain why humans behave the way we do. Biology is definitely part of it, but the other aspects are worth considering ^_^ @@walkingstick6655

I thought of my idea of a Foundation that would change the way charities work, before I learned of Yval Noah Harari, through a Ted Talk. It was great to get all my ideas behind the Foundation validated by his views of Humanity.

fascinating. I think Ronnie has an energy that belies interest and intelligence that go deeper than "this is just a job, this is just an interview," and Yuval can sense it. I'm not sure why it's more engaging than the other interviews that Yuval Noah Hariri has done, but this one just is. I'm not sure that even someone as charismatic as Jon Stewart could have brought this out in him -- it probably would have ended up more confrontational or pessimistic somehow.

Belief can create value, and the value may be in the belief itself. An important observation, I think.
@bardsamok9221
@bardsamok9221 2 місяці тому
Do you have an example of value being in belief itself? And/Or of 'Belief' creating value per se? Or are you saying 'the principle of which you believe' holds the value? Belief itself and a principle that is believed are two different concepts of course. The map is not the terrain and the label is not the item. The process is not the product. The superset is not the subset etc. Just wondering your thoughts because you also find it interesting. Also if you're interested in further discussion, how do you define 'value' exactly? (Re: The context above.)😊

fantastic interview and humour is most needed when serious topics are tackled. I reckon we live in a society that hasn't seem much evolution. If you compare the roman games purpose to current social media, politics and levelling down of human beings not much as changed in 2000 years....
