Been waiting for a video like this. Have around 80 units running ZHA and finally everything seems to work. I have used Deconz but since some annoying bugs i switched to ZHA, don't regret it at all. But now I'm tempted to try ZigBee2MQTT as well 🤓

i migrated from 100+ devices to z2m, and i can say... its worth all the effort for sure! Only the ability to set hue motion sensors to update every second instead of 15 seconds or the sensitivity of these sensors for example.... it has so much more options that zha doesnt have.

I love your videos. Been tremendously helpful as I enter the HA game. And I started on ZHA but went to MQTT when I took everything I learned and started a fresh HA .... MQTT is soooo much better. The interface in groups and bindings and letting you know what is going on makes it a hands down favorite -for me. Keep up the great work !!!!!

I spend about two hours yesterday setting up Z2M. After trial and error, i finally got a IKEA shortcut button paired. after another hour of asking AI and browsing forums trying to figure out how to use it for an automation I gave up.... There was complete inconsistency with what I could read and what i saw in HA. The only options I had for triggering automations where "update available state changed" "battery state change", oh and one "on action" which seems to be the single press.... Was unable to find any information that could resolve my issue. Some solutions suggested went something like this....: "go to the MQTT dahsborad, find your device, then press the pysical device, and inspect the logs in MQTT dashboard, to see what signal was sent, then go to automations, create a MQTT trigger, bind a topic to your device and defined the MQTT payload to listen for, based on what you learned from inspecting the logs" saaaaaay whaaaaat!? how is that even a thinkable UX? 😂 I'm sure there is a better way, but this scared me off completely. Switched to ZHA and this just worked out of the box so far 🤞

nice video 👍🏼 I prefer Z2M because I feel like having more control, I can interact with my devices by publishing JSON payloads to MQTT topics Furthermore, there's lots of info and logs in the Mosquitto broker and Z2M add-ons Getting started with ZHA seems easier but you may feel it's boring after a while
@HomeAutomationGuy

I agree, sending JSON via MQTT is a great way to use Z2M to extend your automations beyond Home Assistant. But you have to remember that most people who want smart homes don't know what JSON is and how to send a payload. For those people I recommend the "boring" way 🤣

Z2M is also the winner in my book because it allows for a cleaner separation, as well as a common interface for more than just Zigbee. With Tasmota support for MQTT, as well as several other micro systems, having one broker setup for all devices just makes sense. It also allows for having other control software for mocking up simple automations, like Node Red, and for correcting and integrating devices that don't follow actual Zigbee spec, which Tuya and Aqara seem to love to do. I also run Mosquito, outside of the HA instance, for more stability there as well. It may add a slight layer of complexity, but in the end it buys a lot more flexibility.

It also really depends on how you want to use your zigbee devices too. I started out with ZHA, and then started playing around with NodeRED, then started using the zigbee devices in NodeRED, and just didn't like how I had to interface with them. Changing to Zigbee2MQTT gave me a way to use them a lot more inline with how I like to work. If you just use the automations in Home Assistant, I am sure ZHA will make more sense.

Z-Wave is rock solid and the pinnacle of home automation mesh networks (and will remain the backbone of my home), but... Zigbee devices are CHEAP and totally usable once you filter out all the junk and problematic ones. It seems that long-term it's better to hitch your horse to ZHA, especially if you're starting down this road for the first time or have only few devices that would require rebinding. Make it a point to shop for devices that are known working with ZHA today, thanks to the table online, that's not difficult to do.

Isn't it better to keep the hubs for each devices and centralize everything on home assistant through the different hubs ? That way you keep the ability to update the devices officially through the hubs as well as some options that are not available on HA (like the last state option in case of power outage) ?

Great Video mate.. I have tried both platforms but got frustrated when ZHA had limited functionality for alot of devices esp Ikea Switches forcing me to move to Z2M. In terms of Ease of Use, Z2M since simple is pairing devices as long the device gets started on pairing mode, Z2M can automatically pickup the device. 1 Disadvantage which i think you did not highlight on ZHA was that during pairing mode it gives certain brand devices a default name e.g. Aqara sensors always gets named Lumi and we have to manually get it changed which is kinda annoying. But to be honest Z2M was a pain in getting setup especially when you are moving paltforms from ZHA.

What mesh protocol does Amazon Alexa (in built in their latest gen dots) use? I have a few old control4 zigbee devices still wired in my house that I can control using the C4/Alexa Skill. The other Nue smart switches were also instantly discovered via the echo dot and I switch these using Alexa. Same goes with a few Philips Hue bulbs. I don't have any other bridges or mesh controllers. So I see all this and control all my switches using the Alexa app. It's a real simple but very robust zigbee mesh. My question is now I am adding Home assistant installed on an intel NUC, what do I do about seeing these devices within HA? Which of these two protocols would suit me best? Do I even need to get a zigbee dongle for my HA NUC? If it ain't broke don't fix it.. So Wouldn't I be best just to Keep using ALexa to control my mesh? Is there any way to "See" these zigbee devices and control them in HA without even getting a HA zigbee dongle? Thanks!

Some devices have more functionality. Is it really worth all the effort of Z2M just so you can play with a cube? In my opinion not really. But it may be worth the effort in order to get something more useful working, such as some Zigbee blinds or other devices that may not have ZHA compatibility.

Given that both systems support more or less the same devices and dongles the choice comes down to being locked-in to Home Assistant or not. I prefer to keep my options open, therefore Zigbee2MQTT and Mosquitto, both running in a separate VM from my HA VM, is my choice.

I don't have the 'motion' sensor but have several other Aqara devices and had the same issue with pairing. At first I thought it was an incompatibility with ZHA so I switched to Zigbee2MQTT. I still had some pairing issues but eventually got them paired. You have to hit the pair button on the device multiple times to get it to pair. I started having issues every time there was a HA core update and devices going offline and so I added an Ikea Tradfri repeater but couldn't get that working correctly so I switched back to ZHA and everything is working fine now. I'm guessing that the initial issues I had with ZHA may have been resolved by the recent updates. The only strange issue I have now is that ALL my sensors are going through the Ikea repeater instead of just the ones closer to that then my coordinator but everything is working so I let it be. I have also since(based on recommendations) put my coordinator(Sonoff Zigbee v3 'E') on a 3 foot extension cable to get it away from my server(Wyse thin client) and get the antenna up higher to minimize any signal strength issues.

Good Video - I have a question about Zigbee Groups. ZHA is terrrible at managing RGCWW LED bulbs. Have you tried to switch more than 6 bulbs in a group? The whole network is basically unusable for a few seconds after sending the command. Now here is the real PITA this doesn't happen with same bulbs on philips hue. I tested with a friend of mine who has 60 bulbs. After adding only 8 bulbs and note all 8 bulbs was less than 1.5m from the coordinator. The same problem with group commands from ZHA. Put all the bulbs onto 2 philips hue bulbs and all bulbs respond INSTANTLY in group commands. I have this issue no matter which bulbs I use. Would love to know if you have any experience of this. BTW I tried to use the aqara occupancy sensor in kitchen where i have 6 ceiling rgbww spots and 1 led strip and 2 ikea bulbs in kitchen hood. The delays and system locking up after sending a group command for a few minutes makes the occupancy sensor useless. If you have any pointers that would be great. After moving from Z2M to ZHA, and it's largely unreliable compared to Z2M, especially if you are regularly needed to restart Homeassistand due to HACS Integration updates. It seems with every restart of HA core ZHA is restarted as well and the network really take a while to re-establish it self. I take up to minutes to get back in reliable state (in my case) further it seems that with a large ZigBee network with about 60 Devices (on SkyConnect) Messages are not arriving well. Further, the Zigbee Group handling is somewhat strange in ZHA. There are a few positive things about ZHA like Easy to setup and maintain, but I would Prefer ZHA would be an independently running offical AddOn rather than part of the core. Just to keep it running while restarting HA Core container. If you have a large installatios or independant Areas it's much easier to have multiple RaspI with Z2M running publishing to a different topic.

Possibly if you have two USB sticks and dedicate one to each platform, but I honestly have never tried it.

Yes, no problem at all and even more. I'm successfully running Z2M with cheap cc2531 usb stick and multiple devices acting as routers, ZHA with Sonoff ZBBridge (tasmota) and separately IKEA Tradfri network with Ikea bridge for reliability with lights. No issues at all.

Can someone answer a dumb noob question: I bought an Aqara E1 hub and thought that I then have a Zigbee device so I can use the Zigbee based device from Ikea. Will the E1 only work with Aqara devices? Do I need something completely different to connect any Zigbee device?
@2Fast4Mellow
@2Fast4Mellow 2 роки тому
It most likely will work with most devices. Zigbee is a standard, but some manufacturers seem to use Zigbee with a dialect. Aussies and Americans both speak English, but have their own vocabulary. Same happens with some Zigbee devices and Philips Hue is infamous for it. Most 'platform specific' hubs are limited in the amount of zigbee devices they support. Most seem to really start to run into issues when you connect more than 20 devices to a single hub. People that run into similar issues often switch to the Deconz Zigbee dongle. A powerful Zigbee solution, but relative to other Zigbee hubs/dongles a bit pricey.
@nmkloster

@@2Fast4Mellow After some time researching it seems that it is not really a ZigBee dongle but actually a USB powered hub. Only works with aqara. I've ordered a dongle

Hi, i alsomtried both...i started with zha, but after the upgrade of ha to version 10 everything became incredibly convoluted requiring creation of developer accounts on some platform in china, and much more.. So i moved to zigbee2mqtt which to me seems to be finally simpler more stable and more independent on the cloud. Did you do perform this test on ha version 9 or 10, is for me zha is totally broken on 10.

I dont agree with the usability. If a device is not supported on ZHA your just out of luck in most cases. in z2m you can add it with an external converter. So the 1700 devices it supports is not the end of it. You can just see what the device exposes and write a little file for it and load it in as an external converter after which it works. ALso ZHA doesnt always pair a device or it takes 10 tries of pairing before it finds it completely. Where z2m always finds the device instantly without any issues if its supported
@HomeAutomationGuy

That is true. But I think ZHA has a similar concept with Quirks? github.com/zigpy/zha-device-handlers

I use zigbee2mqtt and can't seem to get a Philipt Hue light bulb to pair. I have a CC2652R chip as my controller. When I turn on the Philips Hue bulb it flashes rapidly, but zigbee2mqtt doesn't pair it. Thoughts? Good video, thanks.
@HomeAutomationGuy
@HomeAutomationGuy 2 роки тому
You may need to reset it. The Zigbee2MQTT documentation for the bulb will give you some hints on how you can do that. I have on occasion had to reset them a couple of times before they work, especially if they've previously been paired elsewhere (Like a Hue hub)
