Ah, I remember I was that chill teacher who exploded, once. I was a substitute teacher at a Chinese secondary school for Chinese language, my students were the all the year 2 classes and half of the year 3 classes. There's a student in year 2 that not only showed minimal effort in every assignment and test, she even barely bothered to participate during my class, to a point that I was so upset that I singled her out, asking for her to make some attitude adjustment. (which I had never done before. Apparently, I was an outlier for not raising my voice in every class, as it's a standard practice for every experienced teacher.) Well, she doubled down by giving me her lame excuse : "I am a 'lower-level Chinese' student." for her lack of respect. And the straw that broke the camel's back was the f-word remark she made under her breath. That instant, I went on Super Sayan mode that I switched my language from Chinese to English, a language that my students had never heard me using up until that time. The atmosphere of the class dropped to dead cold, suddenly everyone lost their speech and for the first time every single student straighten their backs, looked straight ahead, for fear of being one of the collateral damage. The entire classroom only reverberated with my enraged voice. The thing about this kind of rare explosion is that it's extremely cathartic that you can easily lose control of yourself. I remembered that my self-awareness kicked in few minutes into my berating her, thinking to myself how long my lecture should be to be effective, concurrently figuring out what kind of rhetoric I should use to not make myself sound like an irrational buffoon, all the while trying to maintain my outward expression of displeasure. The whole experience was so meta to me that I didn't feel like doing it again. Anyway, my diatribe had some rippling effects for sure. For the rest of that day, other year 2 classes were extremely well behaved (to my surprise, apparently news spread to other students as soon as I left that classroom) After that event, a few students told me in private that I scared the bejeezus out of them that they were still processing what they witnessed. Finally, the girl came to my desk that day to apologise for her bad attitude. She had another classmate accompanying her. I think she's preparing for another round of humiliation from me, this time it was in front of other teachers Instead. At that point I felt her presence was already an enough sign of her showing remorse, I just calmly reminded her that her participation was the only thing I asked for her, and that's the basic respect all teachers asking for their students.
