Prismacolor has charcoal pencils. They are woodless and are supposed to be the blackest of them all.

I've been using both the Mitsubishi & the Blackwing Pearl. Yes I give the edge to Blackwing. For the money Mitsubishi is a great buy!

Great video! I've been using the Blackwing Pearl for over six years. Very balanced and smooth. As a fall back because Blackwing are very pricey, I also use Mitsubishi pencils. It's a good value. Side note > I too use the KUM sharpener. $25 - Amazon.

Hello RixCanDoit! Pilot G2 plus Energel refill was a rerun presentation. Sounds great. Now I learned that the Uniball Jetstream RT refill can be an accommodation to the Pilot G2. Hopefully that the significant smaller diameter of this cartridge had little effect on stability while writing. I was interested in this transplant myself for the pilot G2 pen. Thank you.

Really good review. I just ordered a box of these off Amazon at about 70 cents each. I have been using a 602 recently and I am very impressed. However, it is a little top heavy for my taste which of course will balance itself with repeated sharpenings. I am after a good writing pencil that I can keep very sharp without worrying about going through too many pricey pencils. Hopefully the 9850 will fit the bill. I have also really started to enjoy 2.0 mm lead holders of which the Kitaboshi is my favorite so far. It is made of cedar and smells wonderful. Fells like a nice wood pencil in my hands and operates more like a mechanical pencil than lead holder. The 1B lead that comes with it has a nice balance of tooth and liquidity. I like it for travel due to how small the OHTO sharpener is and less mess.

Just bought a 12 pack. The wood is not cedar anymore, and the graphite core is waxier than the regular 120 Noris. (no, i don't have a wopex version, the wood is real, just different, whiter, like basswood. the weird thing is that the graphite is different, and it is different in a bad way)

Thanks for the review, Rix. I came to the same conclusion but compared them to the Staedler and Faber-Castell pencils ranges because I don't have the Mitsubishi Hi-Uni pencils. I'm doing an A3 drawing at the moment, just using Picasso pencils, so, when it's complete I'll post it to your group page. I just need to buy a scanner that can scan A3. Any suggestions?

Hello, I heard Mitsubishi UNI KH-20 is really good for charcoal pencils if you use sharpener gently and slowly. Manual helical balde sharpeners might be good for charcoal.

I have the Derwent water soluble set. My 8B comes out a lot darker than the one you reviewed. I have not tried Prismacolor so far.

this comparison should've ended with one being a pen, the other a marker. the marker's fine point is excellent for it being a marker. a pen is a pen. absolutely no confusion here.

The grid method can only give proportions at best. It's up to the artist to bring the subject to like with shading and/or painting. This exact discussion was done with art projectors. The bottom line is, tools do make an artist and a gride, projector, pencil, paint brush or medium are only tools.

The first time I see that a Japanese made pencil is off center! That's very rare.

You just can’t beat Indian pencils for price/quality. The Absolute and Platinum are great, Nataraj bold is also good. I tend to favor my Apsaras and my Musgrave Harvest Pro. If I’m feeling really freaky I go for the 600 News.
