I teach in a south suburb of Chicago. There is extreme poverty where I teach. The families from this area amaze me. There are no jobs, no economy in the south side of Chicago or the south suburbs. Many neighboorhoods used to be working class suburbs. They are now ghettos. The politicians don't care about the south side of Chicago. What gives me hope is the tenacity of the families I work with. There ability to find joy in everything, to deal with what comes as best you can.
