This was my mum’s favourite song. I lost her when she was only 53, it was 3 days before my 21st birthday. That was in 1989 and I’m now 55. My birthdays changed from that moment and were never the same. I miss her as much today as I did all them years ago. Life is a precious gift. I had the best mum for 21 fabulous years.

As a child i inherited the 7in vinyl of this, (46 now) and when asked why i played it a lot but it made me cry? .....i said because its a real love song and no one will ever want me as their honey.... After much distress, I am s waiting for my Honey or to be someone's.....be happy as possible in whatever life gives you, if you get love, real live, stay blessed and enjoy ☯️

I always believed that Honey died a natural death. I played this song for my husband, after I had him listen to Tom Jones song “She’s A Lady”. You see, my husband did not keep his marriage vows that he promised to The Lord and to me. His abuse and adultery tore my heart apart piece by piece for years. I asked him “If The Lord calls me home before you, who will you abuse and commit adultery with?” He couldn’t get to his phone fast enough to ask the preacher to come to our home. The Lord God HIMSELF got my husband’s attention.

This song is, I believe, the ultimate avatar of that genre known as Shlock, Glurge and Dreck. From the blindingly inane lyrics (" hey, man, big tree, huh? But before it was big, it wasn't big") to the condescendingly misogynistic throwaway lines (she was "kinda dumb and kinda smart"....nice!), to the whole premise of the song (the American Diabetes Association declared in 1968 that this song's sappy syrupy sweetness had caused a spike in diabetes diagnoses across the United States), this thing is a classic! And the capper is we don't really ever know if Honey died in a car wreck (we already knew she was a bad driver) or if the husband murdered her (cuz she was kinda dumb and sat alone by herself crying) or if she offed herself (again, she spent a lot of time crying...). The only thing we know for sure is that two years later Bobby Goldsboro topped even this hideous crapola with the even more annoying Watching Scotty Grow (in which a pedophile neighbor 'watches' little Scotty for years...). Bill Cosby was, apparently, the co-writer.

I always liked this song as a kid, but it hits so differently in my older years. I lost my honey, Mike 1-14-21……very unexpectedly. He was my brother’s childhood friend and I always loved him. Finally we got together after many years of being with others. We had 5 and 1/2 blissful years together. He was always laughing and always happy……such a beautiful soul.
