Ok I just have a related question: if a Lieutenant commander in the navy meets a Medal of Honor recipient whose rank was lower than theirs, do they still have to salute?

One of the best scenes in the entire series. When they see the medal they just immediately issue all due respect. The fact that he was not only awarded the Medal of Honor, but is still alive (as most are issued posthumously) is worthy of as much respect as one can muster.

Correctly me if I am right or wrong, but a medal of honour recipient is saluted by any officer and NCO, no matter their rank or branch of the U.S. Military service.

I know this is old but the salute is for the medal, not everyone who receives medals are class acts but that won't change what this medal represents.

The lt didnt salute the cmh holder thats a nono regsrdless of rank it is required to salute a cmh holder first.

Surprised, the writers screwed the pooch when the two Marines snapped to and saluted the commander, who should have also saluted!! Regardless of the MHR's rank, senior officers are required to salute said MHR

I was today years old when I learned he was nominated for an Emmy Award for that performance. I doubt any non combat veteran could have pulled that off.

When I was a kid/teenager I saw this episode and it stuck with me until this day. Now, I am a history teacher, and each time I want to explain to elementary/high school kids the Medal of Honor this is the scene that we watch. P.S. I am teaching in Croatia (a country in Europe).

The FACT that the navy commander didnt render honors says everything about her "diversity" hire and promotions in the military. Yes its a tv show, but ALL ranks salute the medal and holder as a matter of respect and tradition.
