You are using negative terms and words for Vikings and soft terms for other cultures as they all had internal conflicts and devious members of their cultures. The Christian Catholics were some of the cruelist and no I am not an atheist. Martin Luther gave people an escape from Catholic subversion and people left Europe for religious freedom and tyranny as well. Someone said to me Viking means to raid. They are focusing on one word Google uses to define a term in lieu of all yhe worfs used. What about traders or farmers. It may not be acceptable to you, but your comment seems biased and Google based. Google is not absolute in information. There is no absolute. Every culture then were nomads. As a researcher as well, I am dubious of most history. Some history says the Spartans and the Aztecs had their issues as decent human beings. Characterization of history lies in the ability to obtain accurate information and interpret openly and for most that is improbable. I say it's "His-story" meaning those who wrote did so from their perspective and bias. You need scrolls and they have to be interpreted, and those of the Bible supposedly were interpreted by a bunch of guys in the 15th century called scholars who had their interpretation and bias from King James culture..We will never get the true history of any events, especially those of long ago. Carbon dating is not completely accurate, moreso as it gets further in time. Research itself has too many confounders. So it really comes down to politics today, and who you want to condescend bc of your beliefs and bias to make you feel better. To have an open mind is to balance the emotions and not favor one side or outcome, but many cannot have this perspective bc of their emotions. Scrolls today have not been legible and recently we have the Vesuvius challenge where many are attempting to use AI to extrapolate. Anecdotal and Empirical evidence that is more recent is the best we've have for getting closer to information or events. So to believe everything posted on Google or UKposts is not wise. Let us move forward for if you attempt to denigrate withou having confirmation it becomes political and racist, not factual. We were not there in the long past and we just don't know, regardless of scrolls due to interpretation.

I think the question of cost is important, but it is difficult to assess accurately. Crossbows have a higher initial investment cost than a bow, but the initial training cost for an archer will be much higher, especially when you need to replace them. There are several factors that favour the crossbow in a siege, beyond the "sniper" role. Sieges were more common than field battles. A fortified position, like a castle, was an excellent way of projecting power over an area since it could contain mounted troops that could range out to collect tributes and taxes and dispense justice. It also meant a nice retreat for them in case of revolt or outside enemies. A castellan that could tax the surrounding countryside would be in a better position to invest in crossbows than any peasant militia. If the mounted troops of the castle were besieged, an armoury filled with crossbows would provide them with easy to use ranged weapons. These weapons could be placed spanned and ready to load with a bolt at key positions in case of an alarm. It would be much easier to coordinate volleys on specific targets, such as a team rushing to the walls with siege ladders for an escalade. Even non-combatant personnel could be trained to help in the reloading process, and even children could help in resetting and clearing the crannequin pulley ropes to make them ready for reuse.

Main reason of wars is: there are people with not working mirror neurons, their natural destination - rule the society; and they rule it in accordance with mentality of majority for achieving highest social status; so, if most of people would have high level of moral, for example, using some patterns from "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelious, we will live in the world without wars! On my channel I will tell you more about this and other very important things for humanity... World needs this information!

It did ocur as a way of settling judicial disputes in medieval europe for sure. Judicial duels are well documented and may have played a part in determining whose land belonged to who. However I don't see anyone giving a fort or city even a tower over a duel, specially considering the pillage looting and rape that would surely happen. Altough it might be used as a way to demoralize the enemy army, I don't see them just giving up because this guy they heard was the best fighter among them was killed. Maybe if its a dispute between Yeomen of the same country overseen by a lord and the only knight they had was killed, this could happen and they figured out now he was dead the other 6 armed peasants decide they couldn't win anyway but otherwise it matters very little.

William The Conqueror wasn't the only Norman who changed history: another faction of Normans migrated and settled in Southern Italy and, under the leadership of the Hauteville brothers Robert Guiscard and Roger, eventually conquered it from Lombards and Byzantines, defeated Papal and Holy Roman Imperial forces, Roger conquered Sicily from the Arabs, while Robert and his son, Bohemond of Taranto, invaded the Balkans and inflicted some devastating defeats to the Byzantines. And later Bohemond would be one of the main leaders of the First Crusade and due to his previous experience in fighting against the Seljuk Turks (in Byzantine service) he played the decisive role in defeating the Seljuks at Nicaea, Dorylaeum, and Antioch.

It’s likely that a few dozen times over the last few thousands years that leaders strongly dedicated to various chivalric codes (I just use that term as a generic placeholder) actually agreed to honored these terms, but it’s safe to assume 90% of the time mentions of battles decided by single combat are myths.

In Denmark Christian IV is hailed as a great king for his building projects and beating Sweden. I, as a military historian, always really disliked him for his overly ambitious adventure in The Holy Roman Empire. Especially as the consequences was to eventually lose Skåne in a war between weakened Denmark and strengthened Sweden.

Why not? There were many historical sieges in which the city walls were assaulted from the sea, the most notable probably being when the crusaders besieged Constantinople in 1204 - they did assault the walls from their ships, scaling them with ladders, and were incredibly successful in this regard.

I have been watching videos in Italian from Swiss Italian radio and television and one program in particular was very interesting: how the Italian speaking part of Switzerland ended up being Swiss. The fortifications in the city of Belinzona give the clue - initially the Swiss intruders lost big time in a battle with the Milanese led by the condottiero Carmagnola but a subsequent Milanese army got caught in a defile and got massacred by the Swiss and some Italian allies - throwing huge boulders at the Milanese who died like fish being shot in a barrel.

There is such a rediculous number of references to single champion and small group of champion combat that it is pretty crazy to say it didn't occur. Many of the references are not ancient either, some are from the medival period(crusades, English wars etc). That is akin to saying sieges didn't exist or naval combat wasn't a thing. I don't think there is much evidence that battles were decided that way, saving bloodshed. I think it could happen though for minor wars, like border clashes where the outcome won't be disasterous. But if you risk battle there is chance you could lose your whole army and then a border clash turns into losing your kingdom.
@The_ZeroLine
@The_ZeroLine 2 дні тому
Yes, odds are that when they did occur it was to decide small, local battles. There is about zero chance that battles that would precipitate major geopolitical changes would be decided by single battle. One needs to be careful with mentions of single in the chivalric era. Most times these are romantic fantasies inspired by Arthurian legend.

@@conniernordan Concerning the lack of Scandinavian sources, unless I'm mistaken, there appears to be no written norse accounts of either Reginharus' or Rollo's raid on Paris, so we and SandRhoman are all pretty much stuck with Abbo and his obvious bias against both the King and the Vikings here. It may be that the actions of Reginharus, Siegfried and Rollo were not representative of all the people on the Scandinavian peninsula at that time and age. Alas, the thing is, those who attacked and plundered the cities and regions of the Frankish Empire and other kingdoms during the Viking Age did this not as traders or farmers, but as armed men determined to bring something of material value back home. I think that the depiction of the norsemen in SandRhoman's video is not this negative, as it clearly shows that the infighting between the sons of Louis the Pious and the resulting political instability has significantly facilitated the viking raids or even made them possible in the first place. In a certain way, the epilogue commends the way the Norse took advantage of the situation, with Rollo even becoming ruler of what will become Normandy. In the course of History, there were times were the man from the north have been depicted a lot more negatively.

I have to note a factual error: On 17:04 its mentioned that Anne of Austria, was the link between her brother the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II and her husband Sigismund III Vasa, King of Poland. But in fact Anne died in 1598, who was Queen of Poland in 1613 was her younger sister Constance of Austria.

Reginherus is just written that way because the chronicles are in Latin. -us is nominative. Reginher or something that sounds like that would've the Frankish variant of his actual name, Ragnarr. By the way, that extra -r at the end is that exact same nominative, and is from the same origin has Latin -us. Regin = ruler, her = army.
