OMG, I tiled my bathroom on plasterboard 20yrs ago, fitted a shower over the bath etc. Absolutely no leaks, no tiles have fallen off either. I wad going to take the corner bath out, tile the "missing bit" behind the bath, then fit a 900mm by 1300mm tray with glass screen. I wanted to use that fake tile board, it's about 10mm thick and stick it around the wall where the bath is being removed from, then fit the shower tray against that. Will this work? I will use silicone in all the joins like the corner. I don't want to strip all the tiles to fit backer board, then tile board ...

Great video. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem?? Have a gas boiler (not a combi as I have a hot water unvented cylinder), hot water will not come on unless the central heating is on at the same time. Not we have a bit of warm weather I need to put the thermostat up really high to be able to get any hot water. Was hoping it was a faulty motorised valve but having just done Rodgers checks on mu hot water motorised valve I am not too sure. Valve seems open when it should be and closed when it should be but still only getting hot water when central heating on too! Anyone ever had this before??
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 19 годин тому
If the motorised valve to the hot water cylinder is open it should then send a signal via the internal micro switch to the boiler. You have a grey and an orange wire going into the valve. The micro switch completes the circuit on the grey and orange wires. It may be easier to swap over the whole actuator head but sometimes you can tickle the micro switch to get it working. I have seen them clogged with debris.

I wish to fit 40mm pir celotex and the then the elements backer board on top for tileing. If I stick the celotex to the wall first then use the mechanical fixings through both to the wall would that be Ok. Best Regards Brian

yes if you can use the kind of fixings they sell for external wall insulation that will be fine. Otherwise you have to drill plug and screw them in.

For decades we hear about heat loss and such like, yet one of the main heat losses occur at external doors. I cannot understand why we do not provide an air lock at these locations to keep the volume of heat loss to a minimum where recovery time would keep bills lower . Better design of utility rooms for washing /drying and showering to keep moist air and heat in one place & extract moist air at that location .

I use a wheelchair sometimes and had a couple of small strokes at present im using a dw604nt orbital sander nothing wrong with it it’s great but I’ve been looking at getting a small to medium open end drum sander. I’m looking at building end grain chopping boards and people say drum sander is best for end grain. Do you think this might be the best option for me I value your opinion on it and don’t really know anyone I can ask. Many many thanks steve 👨🏼‍🦽. P.s. keep up the fantastic work you do 👍🏻👍🏻

Hello. Please need expert's suggestions/advice. We hired a contractor for a mezzanine floor for our shop and our contractor by mistake/intentionally fixed 50mm PU sandwich panel on floor and finished concrete over it. We have mixed opinion about using sandwich panel as a floor. Our shop is going to open soon and our contractor is still very sure about it because he said sandwich panel has very good load bearing capacity. We are very confused and we do not have a time for re-work. Can anybody suggest me what to do in that case. Thank you
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 2 дні тому
That is a standard floor construction and he is right to say that it is load bearing. If you have photographs of the construction this should help but it should have been done under building control and inspected.

Many thanks for posting this, it covered pretty much what is happening with our system and was really useful. At 2:26 you said that frequent pressure loss is likely to be that the expansion vessel has lost it's charge but at the end you say it may be time to get help. I couldn't see a video about repressurising the expansion vessel, is that something someone with reasonable DIY skills could do or is it a job for an expert? Thanks, David
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 2 дні тому
Hi David It is very easy to top up the expansion vessel. You need to drain a bit of water out of the system so the needle is on zero. Pumping up the expansion vessel is the same as pumping up a bike tyre. You are looking for just over 1 bar. If there is spare capacity in the system the expansion vessel will not have to work against a dead head of water. You only need to drain a bucket full out of the system. When the expansion vessel is topped up you simply repressure the system from the filling loop.

It’s a false argument anyway. We are not going for heat pumps to save money…
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 2 дні тому
There will be people who want to lower their carbon footprint (dubious proposition) but many people will only undertake green initiatives if it doesn't cost them money. Nobody controls the narrative on this so saying it is a false argument is your opinion, which has no more weight than anyone else's.
@paulharrison2325
@paulharrison2325 2 дні тому
@@SkillBuilder dubious proposition - go on? Nobody controls the narrative but you do set the titles of your videos. It is a false narrative that heat pumps should be cheaper, that’s not the intent. The intent is to provide a way to use electricity to heat homes more efficiently than resistive heaters can. This then enables a realistic move away from fossil fuels. It is not supposed to be cheaper, it’s supposed to be cleaner. If it comes out approximately the same cost then great, but it’s a false premise that it should be or will be cheaper. I’m a chemical engineer with two decades experience in power and energy. Not all opinions are equal.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 2 дні тому
@@paulharrison2325 Hi Paul With your long experience it would seem to me that you could have framed the argument a little better but never mind. Let us stick to facts Heat pumps are marketed by many as being more economical to run than a gas boiler so the question in the title is entorely legitimate. Dubious propostion-: much of our electricity is produced by gas fired power stations and moving more people off mains gas onto electricity at the rate proposed means that a great many heat pumps are (indirectl) gas powered. Heat pumps need to run 24/7 to gain efficiencies so that means they are running three times as long as a gas boiler. Heat pumps are not as flexible so a sudden rise in temperature, when you might not need heating, is better dealt with by a gas boiler. Scrapping serviceable gas boilers and replacing them with heat pumps carries embedded carbon. It takes several years to show any carbon reduction. How many heat pumps do we have to install to make any difference to our carbon footprint? Insulation is by far and away more effective at reducing carbon, it can be done a lot cheaper and carries on paying back for much longer. Read Deiter Helm on renewables. He holds the opinion that we are pissing in the wind with most of this stuff and it is a distraction. The money should be spent elsewhere. It is our money in the end and the government is squandering it on virtue signalling. Thanks for the debate by the way.
@_Dougaldog
@_Dougaldog 2 дні тому
@@SkillBuilder I live in North Scotland electricity region (the bit above Stirling), a quick glance at National Grid ESO App' will show that my electricity more often than not is zero CO2 wind and hydro generated. It's an education just to see where electricity for each generating region in UK comes from, quite often gas is not top of the list. As I type East England is 54% wind, 34% nuclear and 13% gas. S.E England 24% wind, 6% gas, and rest imported from Europe... My heat pump is 'off' at present by my choice (it shuts down immediately, sitting in standby consuming 10W), when running it will shut down immediately the outside temperature reaches a specific value. When it ran took an hour or two to bring house ambient up a bit, but still performs well with a COP over 4, since installation the overall is 4.2. The UK fits about 1.5 Million boilers each year into existing homes these are to replace existing units not serviceable units, so a big opportunity to clean up the air a bit. It is anything but virtue signalling, if nothing is done then nothing will change and our environment will deteriorate faster than ever. Already this year the wettest 18 months since records began in 1836, with crops failing and sewers overflowing. If renewables are pissing in the wind then take a look at what China does as it pushes to dominate the World in renewables. Yes it builds coal generators, but it also has a plan to phase them out, it currently produces 30% of its electricity with renewables (enough for 400 Million people (30% of 1.4 Billion)).
