The Apollo spacecraft didn't fly through the _centers_ of the Van Allen belts. They skirted the bulk of the radiation by flying through edge of the outer belt.

No, Starship has not "obliterated" the cost of mass to orbit. The rather outlandish claims made by Elon have yet to be tested.
@MarcusHouse9 годин тому
If you listen to that part of the narrative, you will notice I'm talking about the future. Not now. It hasn't done anything yet. Very true that these claims are yet to be tested. That is what they are attempting now. SpaceX are not afraid to break a few eggs to see what works.
@LeonAustДень тому
The reusability capability for Starship has become a definite risk factor in safety operation of that vehicle and also to its own infrastructure ! And they want to land these things on Mars at regular intervals. 🤔 pie in the sky !

The magnetic North and South poles have moved far that GPS must have to adjusted many times over to give us dependable use. Too note, North magnetic pole was dancing around the upper islands of Canada but now have raced past our pivotal North Pole and is own it's way to Russia. The South magnetic pole has left the Antarctica moving on it's path.

The why is to establish a base of thousands as to avoid much of the near destruction of our planet by a 12,000 year cycle. This has been tracked back in time to at least five iterations. This as I have come see explains the why Space X is working so hard to establish a possible safe place for humidity away from this planet, a place to possibly survive.
@ashardalondragnipurakeДень тому
is it a good idea going that tall arnt you just better off going a little wider at some point its a much more manageable increase, with none of the stability problems why go tall instead of wide

When Elons Falcon 9 mission to 520km with 5 Astronauts Altitude taught him that 3 days at that altitude gave them as high a radiation dose as 9months on the ISS at 370km and the Proton belt only gets really hot from 1500 to 20000 km Altitude, and Solar Energetic Proton Events, outside the Earth's Magnetosphere, are similar, meaning radiation doses would be similar to many thousands of years on the ISS, any chance of humans riding his or NASAs capsules to the moon or Mars ended.

Marvelous research and perspectives Marcus and Team. Thanks for grounding our dreams with significant possibilities as well as the reality of history to date. Timely and well done!
@noahsmith73542 дні тому
Yeah, it's too bad that current civilization won't last long enough for us to do any of this.
@johnpitchlynn93412 дні тому
Marcus, with respect the solution is simple the problem is the execution. Granted once on Mars or the Moon the ONLY solution is moving deep underground. But enroute and on the surface the only solution is for any space ship/rover/space suit to have its own magnetosphere that surrounds the ships and crew and keeps any radiation away from the crew. Easily said extremely difficult to accomplish. To realize such a boundary layer between the spacecraft and space radiation, e.g., solar winds, a field of strength 0.1+ Tesla would be necessary. To accomplish that feat a nuclear power plant of 5KW +. So to me there are three problems we MUST solve before any attempt to get Mars is made. First is the ability to create a protective magnetosphere to protect ship and crew from both cosmic and solar radiation. Second, is new engine technology to get us to Mars in one month or less and three the ability to create artificial gravity enroute. Until those 3 tasks are accomplished we should not even begin to make an attempt. We are going to establish a moon base...and it here we can test solutions to the first problem. Additionally, robotic space craft with new technology engines can be created to send robots to Mars and even artificial gravity. But no circumstances should we send any crew to Mars or even the moon until task number 1 is accomplished. Because if we don't the only thing arriving on Mars is a ship full of dead or dying people killed by a CME from the Sun or Cosmic Radiation or Gamma Ray burst. It only takes one such incident to kill a crew. So to me no attempt should be made until the 2050s at the earliest.....Mars isn't going anywhere and we have the time.

Griffin is corrupted and in the pocket of Boeing. He wants the government to give another 5 Billion dollars of U.S. Taxpayer money to Boeing, so he can get his pockets lined by them. He is just a paid lobbyist by Boeing because they know SpaceX can really do the whole mission without them for a way lower cost. Boeing is one of the the biggest pork barrel companies sucking the hell out of all of are taxes. I'd like to see corrupt Boeing go bye-bye and get to keep my tax money.

This is the biggest con since ENRON....that is Elon Musk's gift....the ability to con people and governments for billions of dollars. The Lunar Lander will never happen....it's a big con. Musk never had any intention to build a lunar lander, he just wants the money...he's a con artist...can't wait to see the American Greed episode on Elon Musk.

@mattybirchall3 дні тому
Fantastic video Marcus, particularly the summary about nuclear getting a bad rap. Another comment I’d have added is that public spending on space is a tiny part of discretionary government budgets, with the likes of SpaceX largely funding their work themselves to date. Plus pretty much all our basic understanding of physics comes from observations of the rest of the universe - so more investigations = better understanding = massive innovations for humanity!

SLS is not science. Is theft. And so, there's no money left for the Mars return mission. No money left for real science.
@CrackingGate3 дні тому
People forget just how much money there is circulating around the world. In reality the money spent on space programs & technology is very very little. People target it as it is such an exotic topic and a lot of the time it is virtue signaling. Dare say most of those who are loud and proud to argue against it don't lift a finger themselves to improve the world, but are happy to sit back and complain.
@NOLAfugee3 дні тому
SLS is just a congressional bailout for ULA

Hey, how about the U.S. stop spending all its money on war? Then, we'd have plenty of money to make things better here on Earth and even increase space funding. This should be obvious.

Great video, Marcus. I think your final point about how space exploration brings a certain unity and vision to humanity, is the most impactful. Imagine how many will be watching the next moon landing as it's live-streamed.
@MarcusHouse3 дні тому
There is little that can bring us together like scientific discovery and exploration. It is the reason humans became the dominant species. Otherwise we'd still be swinging around in the trees.
@bee9e3 дні тому
You are talking about future technology like its already here! - starship has not had 1 successful test! Space exploration has in the past, teached us a lot of positive things. But this was in an era that the US state ran things. I am not shure that spacex and other companies will share new technology so freely as in the past. I really love space exploration, but i dont have faith in that spacex will deliver what it has promised. I think it is more important for spacex to get their hands on public funds, than to explore space! And by the way, spacex is not a government agency.
@MarcusHouse3 дні тому
We'll get there. I've been reading these same comments right from the days of Falcon 1 and grasshopper. SpaceX like to try things out and do things very differently. If you are afraid to fail, you won't be pushing any boundaries.
