I would like to know if when studying a language , should we only one at a time? How could we reach fluency in all languages that we wanted?

For me, Standard American English, Japanese, and Standard Mandarin sound good. The most uncomfortable-sounding languages are Vietnamese, Thai, and Hokkien, followed by Korean. Slavic, Romance, South Asian and Middle Eastern languages all sound more or less defective, but by comparison, one of the most unbearable languages on earth is the Hue dialect of central Vietnam, which makes me suffered great physical pain, and I would feel nauseated and dizzy after hearing this sound.

BCMS are 99% identical which makes them one language. For instance, German dialects can be separate languages because they differ greately from High German. A speaker of one BCMS language can communicate with a speaker of any other language without having learnt it before and without any difficulty! The 1% difference is not even in grammar but in vocabulary which is usually only slightly different. Learn one of them and you will speak (or at least understand) all four. 😊

After watching your video, As a Vietnamese, it turns out that the our pronoun system is way more complicated than that of the Chinese. This leads to the fact that Vietnamese society emphasizes on hierarchical structure by telling each other in accordance with sex, age, occupation, level of education, status of relationship, even biased feelings…😂

An Interesting example of sino-influence vocabulary among Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. In Vietnamese, we use “prepare” or “get ready” by saying “ Chuẩn bị”. The way people in 3 remaining countries pronounce is almost the same Chinese Mandarin 准备 Zhǔnbèi Japanese 準備する Junbi suru Korean 준비하다 junbihada

Have you had a conversation on this Asian tonal languages topic with Stuart Jay Raj? Another polyglot just like you who's from Australia but living for decades in Thailand just as you did in Japan. The only so-called polyglots(mainly westerners)I admire are those who have a good command of several Asian languages like you or him. I myself speak several Asian languages like Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien and Vietnamese. In fact, your explanation about Vietnamese pronouns impressed me very much, mainly because I never saw anyone out there specifically referring to this topic. Even native Vietnamese speakers who teach this language never do this on detail. As you maybe fully aware, Japanese and Korean feature the same characteristics in regard to the usage of pronouns. So many different words for "I" and "you" depending on the age gap, social position, relationship and familiarity between the speaker and the hearer.

The movie shown is the first part of "Jak Rozpętałem Drugą Wojnę Światową" (How I kicked off the WW2) which is a famous and very hilarious polish comedy. In the scene you see the protagonist who says he is "Greg" (you can listen again to the long version which is the cause for the comedy as MOST true Germans are NOT able to pronounce that name - believe my I teased many with it...)... The SS-officer in the movie was (IMHO) one of the most famous polish actors (Emil Karewicz). Even without polish knowledge (in all three parts they speak not just polish but also German, Yugoslavian, Turkish, Italian and I think some Russian), if subtitles are available, its really funny to watch.

I’d like to point out that Vietnamese from the diaspora (born and raised overseas) usually have a very hard time understanding Vietnamese dialects outside of their own. I wouldn’t say the dialects are 100% mutually intelligible. It’s more that the Vietnamese in Vietnam have learned to understand each other by exposure.

i think you should have also covered the speed at which the languages are spoken, considering japanese is the fastest spoken language in the world, while chinese being very slow.

So today, I was telling my brother about why my kids are interested in learning languages. I told them it's because they see me when I'm studying Greek. For some reason, he got mad and said tou csnt say you know a language or all these languages if you can't speak fluently. I never said I spoke fluent. I said I like studying languages because I want to be a polyglot. He kept saying we are too old to do all that and bla bla....im 33...he's 48. He doesn't like the idea apparently of me studying more than one language because he doesn't do that. I find everything he said funny because I see you and all that you accomplished, and I hear what my brother says, and it makes me laugh he says he's more qualified to speak kn the matter because he's a professor. Wait till you hear what he has to say about black belts and martial arts🤣🤣🤣

Very good presentation. I guess that language learning for most isn't worth it, too much effort for little compensation. So what you call "subjective factors" shokld dominate.

Another great video. Many can lookup a few things on Wikipedia, mess with beginner's learners materials. Almost no one can compare the different languages and understand the cultures as well as you do. Sound quality improved, but it still isn't there. I don't know what you could do.

Finally someone mentions about pronouns. People keep talking about tones but pronouns are the tricky one. 31 yo native speaker like me still gets confused sometimes.

Like always, an amazing video. I am Serbian and I could understand everything these two news presenters spoke in Slovak. Of course I understood everything what said Croat and Bosnian presenters and Macedonian too. BCMS language is highly melodic with complicated stress system so the native speakers can immediately tell where the speaker of BCMS is from, more or less by only hearing one word. Tinny different stress on every word

I am sorry, but Ukrainian does have Vocative case (вербо, калино, сестро, мамо, зірко, сило, повитухо, мальво, бандуро, школо, свахо, дружино, мово, голубко)

Chinese kanji much simpler than Japanese kanji to many stroke + need to know what order you must stroke I'm sure Chinese you doesn't need following the stroke order and they can still read it

Ďakujem za zaujímavé video. Prekvapilo ma, že Slovenčina ma veľa spoločného s juho-slovanskou vetvou. Častokrát máme aj rovnaké slová zatiaľ čo v Češtine sú odlišné. Neviem či to je tým, že som častokrát cestoval do tohto regiónu, ale mám pocit, že juho-slovanským jazykom rozumiem viacej ako Poľštine.
