Hi Harry, first of all let me say what a fantastic creation and thanks for sharing. I am currently trying to find help on building an LED cube and due to the fact I am very new to electronics I am struggling to understand how this all works. I have learnt about the shift registers and i understand what they do but I am unsure about the transistor circuits. I am planning to build an RGB cube and if I were to use your schematic could i scale it up to do what is effectively 3 times the amount of LED's? I have bought "common cathode" RGB LED's. Any help you or anyone reading this post could give would be most appreciated. Thanks.

how did you calculate the the voltage?

Do you really need an external power supply? Or can you just activate a single led fast enough, so it looks like that there are more than one activated at the same time.

Very impressive. A thought occurred to me while watching. If during assembly the LED bodies were masked, once fully assembled the cube could be spray with matt black paint, to coat all of the silver wire. The main reason being that it would make the wire cage much less visible, and create a nicer illusion. A side benefit is that it would help prevent corrosion and tarnishing of the wire over time. Covering each LED with a little bit of masking tape wouldn't take much time - plucking all the masking tape off again would be a bit tedious and tricky however.
