If you live on the West Coast, it’s Ne-vaa-da, not Ne-vaw-da. Sure, the latter is correct if you go by the roots of the word, but locals just don’t pronounce it that way. You say ‘Ne-vaw-da’, you get funny looks

California is also pronounced differently in Spanish. In English it’s Nevada, not Nevahda

The “correct way” IS the correct way dictated by the population that resides there. To pronounce it “Nev-aw-da” just identifies you as an outsider.

@@idontwantaname9750 there’s lots of places that have specific pronunciations by locals that “defy the rules of language”. Examples: Norfolk, Virginia is pronounced as “Nor-fuck” by locals. Mobile, Alabama is pronounced “Mo-beel” by locals. Worcester, Massachusetts is pronounced as “Wu-ster” by locals. Hell, you probably didn't even know that Los Angeles "defies the rules" too. If it was pronounced in it's correct Spanish pronunciation, it would be pronounced "Los An-hel-es", but it's not. Everyone pronounces it "Los An-jel-es". Basically, all I’m saying is you don’t go to someone’s home and tell the people who live there that they’re mispronouncing the name of their own home town/city/state, whether it “follows the rules” or not.
