I've been disapointed with the assassins creed games after black flag, and imho the series leaked with AC2 or Brotherhood. Dumping the current timeline was a mistake, it'd deserve its own game. But there's another issue. In movies there's a rule: Show, don't tell. It means to limit exposition and let stuff come up organically. This can also be applied to game stories, the games are fine there, but this also needs to apply to game mechanics. In AC2 you don't finally buy the second hidden blade with 40 killpointxps after saving for it and wanting it for so long because you saw it locked away on some tech tree. You carry some boxes for Leonardo fucking DaVinci and he gives you the blade as a gift after some crazy idea he had to use two instead of one. Which is better?

I agree, I played Elden ring in this way where I would go to very high-level areas while being new and underpowered. Obviously I lost lol but then when I went back later in the game, it made the win so much better.

I did the same thing but with a Wild Bore. Figured my Monster Hunter experience would help me. I had a different takeaway from the experience though. Having just one level make a difference between me getting my teeth rammed in and wiping the floor with the hog made the system feel so much more redundant.. The environments in the game are still stellar, though

This reminds me of my sister and I's fondness for Hjoromir, a custom-voiced NPC companion from the Interesting NPC's mod for Skyrim. His constant boasting and talking about his mother, I still remember that 9 years later and it's distinct from most people's Skyrim experiences.

This reminds me of when I was playing Daggerfall, and had accepted a quest for defeating a creature in someone's home. It was a daedroth, and I had no weapons that could harm it because of material immunity. So, with 3% hand-to-hand skill, I punched, kicked, and kited the thing around the dining room for 10 minutes... before my guy passed out from exhaustion. I had to bully the giant scary demon lizard with baby punches, leave, rest at the inn, and walk back in to finally punch its skull in. Afterwards, of course, I made a hand-to-hand character.

One time in quarantine I played that borderlands spin-off, at the beginning of the game I found a really fun goofy gun and decided to play with it, I carried it throughout most of the game even when it was ridiculously underleveled. Most fun I've ever had on a game.

Elden Ring does NOT restrict you based on character level AT ALL. You can play through the whole game without ever reaching level two if you feel like it. That is true for the Souls-Series as well. You can play from Demon's Souls all the way through to the end of Elden Ring without ever leveling your character once These games only restrict you by your own ability to control your player character. Even on level one the game gives you more than enough possibilities to deal sufficient damage to even the last boss.

I would say, don't give up on recommending older games to newer gamers. I've played plenty of games that were "before my time" including SWAT 4, Diablo 2, Blood, Doom, Half-Life, Deus Ex, Dungeon Siege. And I'm currently looking into playing Fallout 1 and 2. Even without the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia, those games are incredible and they do stand the test of time. The point I guess I'm getting at is that those games weren't just great 'for the time', they were great games and still are today. And almost all of them have sourceports or fixes/overhauls which are easy enough to install to play them on modern computers.

I must agree with this "view" on playing games, honestly how couldn't I when I play Runescape since god damn 2006-2007 to this god damn very day. Sure there's been pauses and for the past 5 years I've been more off than on, but still it's that game which will never stop surprising me and creating challenges for yourself is what this game's been about... well almost forever for me. Getting Firecape was my goal at first back in 2006, absolutely underleveled, undergeared yet I tried over and over and over again. After millions of tries I finally got it and proudly wore that animated cape everyone was jealous of me having it. Then I died in the Wilderness since I didn't know it's gonna be lost upon death and on top of that that account was stolen from me. Year later with much more knowledge I went at the Fire Cave fight again, this time getting that cape on my first try and it didn't feel so good like it did before, I was much higher level, had almost the best gear in every slot, had access to potions I never had before and overall that firecape although must've been impressive for the regular player, for me it wasn't. So I decided to creat another account and get the firecape on even weaker account than I did the first try. Sure, I had the knowledge, but going in almost full Rune armour deemed impossible. After another million tries in almost the whole Rune armour set, I finally got it and again I felt that dopamine rush. So I decided to search for another challenge and hence my love for creating my own ways to play every single god damn game was born. The latest where I "use" such method is Escape from Tarkov. I've been playing that game ever since the Alpha came out thanks to my UKpostsr friend who god hold of 2 pass accounts. At the time I had my poor old nVidia GeForce 9800GT which resulted in unbelivable 15 FPS and blue screens after playing the game for too long, yet I had so much fun. Finally made myself to upgrade to GTX960 which helped little bit, yet I was still playing at like 40-50 fps most of the time. Even with such handicap I've managed to acquire Kappa container numerous times, did everything the game had to offer over the years over and over and with every new thing added? You bet your kidney I tried it out. But afterall it again felt lame to get Kappa container like I did several times before, so I started restricting my playthroughs, later on when I talked my friends into playing it with me (around patch 0.11 when the game finally became more popular) I let them to play as they pleased, only helped when they asked me to, but I had different plans. I was going shotguns only for one wipe and sure it deemed impossible at the time, since shotguns were purely early/mid game weapons, the so called "leg meta" was a viable options, but players with KEDRs and other SMGs had the luxury of just dumping the whole mag, yet with a shotgun you had to try really hard. Although I wasn't succesful at first, I tried another wipe on top where I couldn't use the flea market. It took much much longer, but I succeeded and acquired Kappa container with only shotguns (had to use some other weapons for quests, but for example SVD kills still were able to do on factory, pistol kills were super easy as well and AK-74U for example on Customs were only used as a secondary weapon on scavs only... all PMC kills outside of quest kills were with shotguns.) And yes I must agree that this must sound super horrible for some and for some it must sound super boring. For those I'm gonna say that I did the very same thing with only pistols, only KEDR/KLIN, only mosin and now I have sights on doing the same thing with only MP-18 which is a single shot rifle (categorized as a shotgun fsr) and ON TOP me and my friends created a sort of a "grocery list" of tasks we all must complete before certain things can be unlocked. i.e. before any level 2 trader we must get 10 melee kills, 2 grenade kills, at least 1 boss kill and have above 5m roubles to name a few. We all sat down one evening and everyone wrote 150 tasks which we then threw into a randomizer and let the random chance decide what we gon' do. We also did a Tarkov Bingo where one night we all had free time the next day and we had 6 hours to fill out the bingo card. That's how I enjoy games nowdays, even if it's a singleplayer game I just set myself a goal that seems impossible and complete it. If the game cannot offer much more challenges, I decide to 100% the game and consider it DONE.

bosses should be hard because of superior AI, like the quake 3 tutorial duels. not just because they're damage sponges. you could have that progression-based challenge tied to raw skill rather than arbitrary stats. but devs are too lazy to make good AI these days.

I did the same thing in New World, going into adventures at higher level places. It was such a blast, seeing new sights that were not "meant" for me to see just yet, new enemies with amazing skills that could 1 shot me. That feeling of discovering a new structure, just for it to be filled with monsters I just couldn't deal with, as I was running for my life while enjoying the scenery. This made the game for me, and as I was getting stronger, my friends and I would visit those places and just one shot the enemies. No fun, no sight seeing, no wonders of "How many attacks can they perform, or is this the only one they have". I truly loved this feeling.

i remember playing farcry 5 back then and loving the game so much that i never took a vehicule to get from one place to another cause i wanted to explore every last bit of map possible. Back then, it was the prettiest game i've ever played, but now, i redownloaded the game not too long ago, played for like 10 to 15 minutes but it wasn't the same, i hated it. I quickly closed the game because i didn't want to ruin this nostalgic feeling i had playing the game. I think it's a good sign for me to hate playing this game cause i don't want it to get too repetitive and leave the good memories alone so they won't be tarnished from overplaying the game too much

This reminds me of my childhood game, Asterix & Obelix XXL. Not knowing English, I was oblivious to a lot of the hints and game mechanics, but still brute forced my way through and nearly finished the game. I got stuck in one of the levels of the final area, and even looking up tutorials didn't help me as I still didn't really understand anything. The game has a "combo" mechanic where you can perform special attacks after filling your combo meter. But you have to do specific button combinations to perform these, and you also have to have unlocked the power beforehand. I went through the whole game designed around this mechanic without ever using a single combo attack. The part I got stuck at had you fight 100 enemies at once, assuming you're just gonna do one of the big flashy moves to take down tons of them simultaneously. I tried for hours fighting them all one by one, and I kid you not, one time I died once there was just 1 enemy remaining. I tried different parkour moves to jump over the barriers and skip the fight as well, to no avail. The later levels in the game have even more enemies, so I was just going to get stuck again even if I somehow got past that part, but it's still a cool memory to hold on to.

It feels weird hearing you make a video about the exact thing I also love to do in Ubisoft games. I guess it’s because there aren’t many other leveled open world games that let you force this kind of difficulty, but it can be really fun and rewarding to beat challenges in games much before you’re meant to. It’s a rewarding kind of cheating the system. In fact, I think the first time I ever interacted with a game like this was AC Revelations. The moment they plopped me in the open world, I set out on a quest to liberate every sector of the map before I did any of the main story. Most of that quest was spent fighting enemies with enormous health pools, but back then the hidden blade was still capable of insta-killing any enemy in combat, provided you could time its minuscule parry window dozens of times in a row.

Demon's Souls will always be in my top 5 games because it changed the way I play ALL games. Prior to DS I'd usually just play on normal difficulty. The challenge and reward I experienced from that game changed my mindset, and I now play on the hardest difficulty level every time. The rewards come fewer and farther between, but they're SO much better.

When i reached Diamond City in my first playthrough of Fallout 4, due to a bug, all friendly NPCs were enemy (and as they were capital for the main quest, unkillable (with a huge amount of HP)) therefore i thought i was too low level and left. I then scavenged the whole map for tenths of hours and completed all side quests i could find, as if it was the main quest. I then decided to give another go to Diamond City and entered without any harm. It was not what the devs planned, and i might also be the only one who experienced this, but i enjoyed it.

I miss games like Gothic. Places are locked away from you because enemies were actually different and stronger from those you've seen before, not by just having a higher number level above their heads, which I think takes away that desire for exploration. It encourages you to adventure and discover, learning thigs the things the hard way, learning what you can and can't mess around with, making it more rewarding later, when you came back stronger, having your revenge and granting you easier access to new paths to explore.
