It’s funny about the mask creepiness. For Halloween I once made a mask of my own face. It creeped people out.

What about the moment of redemption when Rita "buys" Phil at the auction and she empties out her purse to do so? He wakes up in the morning and she is there and he asks, why are you here? And she says, I bought you, I own you. Redemption. That broke the cycle but it was because she saw his maturity and selflessness and wanted him, kind of a modern day Pinocchio story. Great movie and great overview!

Thank you for the wonderful video. The film is so beautiful and in my opinion has received far too little attention.

Great video, although I noticed you left out covering the character development of Tony Stark when he traveled back in time - he discovers his dad was actually more "balanced" in having concern for his family than he previously thought, and is able to let go the resentment towards his dad that Tony had been carrying inside him for decades and had contributed to Tony's initially flawed character.

Collateral and the Death of Neon - It's on UKposts and is awesome. It shows how drastically the lighting effects are and how the digital format was used to give a movie it's very unique feel. It's a great watch and I highly recommend it.

Kubrick used isolation often in his films as a method of suspense. The fear of having no control due to isolation just steps it up to the next level

The thing I find most interesting about both films is that the motives of their respective leads are actually very similar. If you read between the lines, it's clear that the reason Nina and Andrew are so driven to be, not only very good, but the best there is in their respective fields, is that on some level they're wrestling with the fear that they should not exist and don't deserve the life they've been given. Both of them are implied to have been born into less-than-optimal circumstances: Nina's mother got unexpectedly pregnant with her and had to quit ballet, and Andrew lost his mother in childbirth. Everything they do is an attempt to convince the world and themselves that things are better because they were born than they would have been otherwise.

What the hell happened to Jon Hamm? He was on top of the world in Mad Men. .Beloved by viewers, so handsome., great voice, star material for sure. Surely, the next James Bond, at least. Hollywood anxiously awaited ; or so.we thought. Then after MM -- nothing. Making stupid 'comedy' movies and even TV commercials. These days, how the mighty Hollywood stars have fallen.

Hi Michael Great essay, truly!. I always find myself coming back to this video when writing any of my films. I came today and was sad to see that your blog post about this film no longer is a available? Is there somewhere I can find this? Your work is always so insightful and so helpfully to any filmmaker. Your channel is what I wished I saw more of when I was younger. Sad to see less of this type of content but happy to have been here the whole ride with you.

Hitchcock said making a film happens in the edit. The film edit exposes the act of seeing to tell the story. Maybe another way to say it even the worst film can be saved by someone who understands how to edit. American Beauty is a great film, transformed in the edit. I always found a bit of myself in Ricky, maybe because of his love of mucking around with video cameras and seeing the real beauty of life through them. The Nurd with the video camera and lots of recorded tapes.

Of the three Nolan Batman films The Dark Knight is much better than the other two. Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker is arresting on every level. A true Psychopath who's prepared to lose everything to gain everything. And Batman is much the same another Psychopath just dressed up differently. Maybe what really makes The Dark Knight special is the more you watch the film the more you adhere to everything Heath Ledger does as The Joker. A ultimate protagonist who steals the entire film

Kubrick was a master of Symbols, Motifs, Themes. 2001 ASO is one classic example yet the Hollywood award system had no idea of the masterpiece he produced. Using the power of symbols is no guarantee of any award success. In fact it may just spook an audience who are just out for cheap entertainment.

Old video now I know but as it's one of my favourite movies I wanted to weight in. I always disagreed with Eric's adaptation of determinism vs free will. I think the story is more poignant if we look at it from the Heptapod's perspective. Time is non-linear so the fact Louise can experience the past, present and future all at once (like having her baby, her daughter dying) means that it already happened (since time doesn't move forwards or backwards). I like to believe she was always meant to have her baby, that it was indeed, inevitable. The fact she feels she chose to have her anyway, surely means that time was predetermined.
