I used to work for a company that made NC tool grinders (I wont say who they are) BUT... while I was there I worked in R&D and was involved in some pretty hi level meetings. The one that sticks in my mind is the one in which I talked to the company marketing director, who I earlier found was an engineer (I am not an engineer but work in R&D), and I asked him WHY he would want to go to the dark side (marketing), and he said 'marketing drives the sales process', he was sick of going to marketing meetings as the head of engineering and the marketing people said 'we aim to market this in the 3rd week of quarter 2 this year'..... to which I said 'thats too optamistic, we wont be ready by then' Then the owner of the company said 'that sounds feasible' and that was pretty much the end of the meeting....... 'I was stuck holding my d*ck in my hand, trying to achieve the impossible'. This guy then decided to get on the RIGHT side of the equation and he signed up to do a marketing degree the following week. Since then, his life as been much EASIER......... I cant feel that UGREEN, with the release of this product was just like that. The problem is, near enough is not good enough for the end user.

@ASUSTOR_YT36 хвилин тому
We have Quicksync. In our other products. But, for a new NAS, there are no good modern options from Intel. This one in particular is not a plex machine. It's a super fast all SSD content creation machine. If we used the Intel offerings, we'd lose PCI Express 4.0, 11 PCI Express lanes, 10GbE, ECC RAM, the ability to add more than 16 GB of RAM.

@ASUSTOR-YT @NASCompares .... I own a Flashstor Gen1 with 12 Crucial P3 4TB drives. After long thoughts, I went for a Raid6 with BTRFS. You wanted questions, here they are : 1- will I be able to upgrade to gen2 by just moving my drives from a gen1 to gen2 device without losing my data? 2- Will I be able to reuse the heatsinks I bought for the gen1 in the gen2? 3- Will there be an OS upgrade for gen1 to be the same as gen2? 4- Will you finally explain more clearly in your OS what happens under the hood? Per say, please explain directly that doing a Raid with BTRFS doesn't use the BTRFS raid feature. It's using software Madm to build the Raid, then the BTRFS on top of it. Which is a good thing! Especially since BTRFS has still some Raid 5/6 issues if you use BTRFS Raidi 5/6 internal feature instead of an external Raid layer. 5- Will the dual RJ45 allow the NAS to receive a 10Gb link and be then connected through the other 10Gb port to a switch with a 10Gb port and let's say 8 x1Gb ports while allowing switch peripherals to passthrough the NAS? 6-Why no integrated GPU or optional card slot for people needing it?

@@ASUSTOR_YT I'm sorry, but UGREEN is about to mass-ship an all-flash NAS that uses an Intel processor, has USB4 with Thunderbolt support, takes up to 64GB RAM and has 10G Ethernet. @@jeffnew1213 Some of us - I'd say most of us in this audience - want something a bit better than 'marketing' ECC. That you think that DDR5 ECC should be used for marketing says everything anyone needs to know about people pushing uGreen kit. DDR5 onboard ECC verifies the integrity of the data on the DIMM - and nowhere else. It's a requirement as NAND speeds and capacities increase. Full ECC as per this device, verifies the integrity of the data between the DIMM and the memory controller on the CPU. These two are not the same. DDR5 ECC will gladly allow flipped bits to eat your software defined storage array, it's only *marginally* better than no ECC at all.

i think it's time to move on from 10G to faster networks because it's too easy to saturate the 10G connection, and nvmes operate at so much faster speeds, it's such a shame not to be able to remotely utilize all this speed over ethernet connection. i'm still not sure whether it's better to get a device like this or a device with pcie slot where you can place a 40/100G network adapters. even a usb connection is four times faster. the NAS situation nowadays are kind of sad that sometimes directly attaching an SSD over thunderbolt (so about 2800MB/s) is a better way to go if you're looking for speed.
@nascompares6 годин тому
Tbh it's the CPU that needs to be highlights as the network overhead too. Sure, slap in a 2x 25G/50G card in a server and 12 Gen 4 SSDs... technically... TECHNICALLY those SSD at 7K each should be able to saturate...but the CPU would need to be hench as F! That's when we are tip toing into the real dull scale Ryzens and Xeons

I really like these little mini topics.. AND. When it is on something I am struggling with.. I have an old synology nas with two 1gb ports.. I am updating my network to support 2.5 and 10tb speeds.. I started with link aggregation.. after a lot of looking I found a switch at $300 can which had 8 1gb and on 10gb.. I don’t want to spend that kind of money on old tech. So.. I discarded the link aggregation option.. your mention of smb multi link excited me…. My pc’s have 2 ports so.. giddy up.. I read a bunch and then the disappointment…. You need v7.2. Sadly I am on v6.2. I configured then nas with two addresses and the pc with two addresses.. all the traffic goes to the main address…. Guess it is time to get a more modern nas..😢

One extra detail.. I tried a 2.5gb usb adapter on the usb 3 port.. Linux recognizes the network device but does not configure v6.2 to use it.. so many dead ends….
