I am a direct descendant of Elmer Ellsworth he has many cities and towns named after him including at one time the Ellsworth Air Force Base which are not too proud of and I don't know if he would be because it was a nuclear site to launch missiles but when he died the family line promise to never let his name die I know as far as my family line we failed him but the name never appeared in his many kids and in his kids after that and then his kids after that and it's sad because I never had kids because my father was so horrible I didn't want to become like him or I swear by everything that's holy I would have kept Elmer's name alive in our bloodline I will take a DNA challenge any time of the day it's a known fact I directly to send from him not second cousins or this or that I literally come from his kids to their kids the their kids the little kids down to all the way to me I just want to say thank you for recognizing him he means a lot in our family history and making this video is beautiful I appreciate it so much

The quote from his father about having a bodyguard in the afterlife is the stupidest thing I've read. If they failed to guard him in battle (and all got killed) in life, they wouldn't do any better in an afterlife.

Where the hookers captured women of the south? I dont see them paying during a war. Lets not pretend that the North didn't commit any war crimes.

Thank you for making this video. I teach world war 1 to my students and needed a video that tells the story. This is perfect. It’s going to be shown to 142 8th graders today with a scene from the movie

The man was killed in the initial charge and most likely in the first few confederate volleys. His bravery was futile. Attrition won the civil war. All RGS did was get his men killed.
@laidbacksage25742 місяці тому
Which directly changed the war by the Africans Americans that joined after hearing the bravery of the 54th so it wasnt futile
@zachjacobson28282 місяці тому
Dying with a sword in your hand and your men at your side is never futile. He fought with his men, dies with his men, and was buried with his men. If ever there was a commander deserving reverence, it would be this man.
@srujan00Місяць тому
That was the style for a long time, charge forward/march forward. It really didn't change until WW2.

For whatever it's worth, my grandmother referred to John as Uncle John. As i understand it , he was her mother's uncle. My mother had cut us off from all family relationship. My great grandmother (born soon after the War Between the States) had gone to Florida with her husband, and they established a ministry there for those who were then known as "colored people." These folks were mostly Seminole and freed slaves, but Cherokee, too, and all people of color suffered under resentment and disadvantage. It was against the law for the people to "assemble." But grandfather (McCoskey) erected a pole structure of sorts where he would hold services on Sunday and grandmother (Sarah? Price McCoskey) taught school lessons. Sarah was a very religious woman. If it's true that John was her uncle, i suppose he was, too. But when, then, did the family have a large tract of land in Baltimore, I wonder? I recall that my grandmother tried to recover some of the land confiscated as part of the estate of a CSA officer. But she was never able to find adequate records to prove a relationship. In the time elapsed, Baltimore had given 99 year leases to those who wanted to build there. When i was young, this area in Baltimore was called Price Estate. My grandmother was as upright a woman as ever existed, but she had a greedy son-in-law. He had taken apartments in Baltimore and Washington as he attempted to get some renumeration for his wife's loss. My father and his sister were the only heirs, I was told. I never knew what to believe. It probably sounds strange by today's culture, but my father didn't strive for money.

Fort McHenry was 1/2 of the battle. Ships were sunk in the harbor entrance. Infantry could not be landed behind the fort and attack. Infantry units were landed on the other side of the harbor. Militia units stopped them cold. One unknown man, in a tree, took out the commanding general and others wearing gorgets. He had a few men reloading the rifles. He was killed.

If you can find it, an illuminating book to read is Lincoln's Scapegoat General, by Richard West. I guess I have a small amount of skin in the game, as I had an ancestor who fought in the 31st Massachusetts (PIttsfield) organized by none other than B.F. Butler.
