I seem to remember radio shows which you would record on tape. Also, there were some more games and programs on vinyl. There was packet radio. And they brought a C64 game compilation on a CD (not CD-ROM, audio CD!) with an included adapter to connect your CD player to the C64 tape port. A fast loader was included as well IIRC. Anyways, good work again. I like your content, and (please don't hold it against me) I think.. uh, let's say you're nice to look at, that's a bonus. So thanks and keep up the good work!

My father used to get coding magazines like that and I used to spend hours coding games on my Atari home computer. The pay off was being able to play the games after I was done.

I wonder of all the people that even tried this when there was an actual contest, how many even got past loading it. If recording it directly to tape didn’t work, you could try a step further and record it into a computer first and clean up the audio. I remember having a stack of re-recorded cassettes with programs for my c64 but it took so long to load. Computing required a lot more patience.

Loved this episode Kari, just imagining how I would have got this onto tape back in the 80's, as our entertainment system was a massive wooden piece of furniture with the speakers integrated !!! I wonder if you could transfer by just recording the output from the speakers directly !!! p.s. loving all the different t-shirts and your passion for retro ... you were born in the wrong century πŸ˜†

"I think we've just killed the Thompson Twins!" - hahaha! I really admire your dedication on this, three copies! I have a 7" single by Chris Sievey (aka Frank Sidebottom) that has a bunch of ZX81 software on the B side. Do you have a ZX81, and would you like to feature it in a video? Happy to send it to you if you like, I doubt I'll ever get it to work with the kit I have.

I've never seen it done, but would be interesting to load a game over HAM radio....I mean, they already use SSTV (Slow Scan TV) to send photos over the radio....why not send computer data? Although it may not be strong enough for a computer to read it...the images don't always come out clear....so computer data may be a bit trickier...

Benefit of hindsight because i had zero success loading games from Vinyl way back when. I figure it might have been more reliable if the stylus on the record player was for mono vinyl and the cable was Phono to Mono but who knows, you got it to work which is more than I ever did so lkudos. As for other distribution methods, some radio stations broadcast games as audio to record onto cassette, there was at least one TV show which broadcast software via audio and the BBC used Teletext to distribute software to go along with, I think, "The Mighty Micro" TV show.

Another record to check out if you haven’t already is Pete Shelley’s (from the Buzzcocks) XL1 album, which has a Spectrum code in the run out groove which you can copy to tape and load, and it has a visualiser you can run along with the album. It’s also a great synth pop album so we’ll worth finding.

Huh. You'd think recording to cassette was just so you wouldn't wear out the disc, as those types don't last very long. Interesting that it actually made it readable to record it on cassette, which you'd think would only introduce more noise. The idea that it has to do with raw volume makes sense, though. Maybe you could record it at a lower volume and then crank it up better on the tape. I was expecting you to either get it directly from the disc or to have to record it to computer and filter it in some way. Then maybe put it back on cassette for ease of loading.

The music that plays at the start: was that part of the game? If so, did it come from the computer itself or the tape drive?

Well that was a lot of nostalgia for me! I had that magazine with that record back then and I remember the struggle to get a usable copy on tape and load it up. But I finally managed it and was rewarded with one of the worst games I had seen on the Speccy... :-) Now I went and checked if I still had that magazine and record. And I did! The record is in pristine condition! But I'm not going to load it up again! ;-)

I had a original 2600 from 1982, ET was the worst game released for it, I saw a documentary stating it was rushed out from development to retail in 6 weeks to coincide with the movie, Atari inc. stated its sales were so poor most went to landfill. That aside I love your channel and it's a great trip down memory lane.

They also had an Atari 2600 game that I played quite often. I had no idea it was them for a while (as it looks more like a space game with aliens), but it plays the iconic Don't Stop Believing intro on the intro screen. It's called "Journey Escape," and is purportedly about them avoiding fans, paparazzi, and similar to get to their van.

I like the Thompson Twins and even used to occasionally buy the Computer and Video Games mag, but I don't remember seeing this flexidisc issue. Mind you, I had a BBC Micro at the time, which wouldn't have been as dog slow running the game as the Spectrum appears to be! My favourite TT album is Here's To Future Days - every track is a killer (I felt their other albums had the odd filler or two in them) and the 2-CD deluxe edition has some nice remixes on it too.

Here in Brazil, there was a pioneer and visionary teacher known as Pierlugi Piazzi (Professor Pier) that had a radio show and at the end of each episode he broadcasted a program using one of available radio channels (left or right), for example on the left channel he played a song while on the right channel he was transmitting the program compatible with a computer family he said before start transmitting. This was the early days of wireless communication :)
