This takes me back to memories of my high school girlfriend and taking her to the prom and doing the slow dance with her all night. She was a slender and willowy Irish Catholic girl with golden brown hair, and she was my first love. We were 15 when we first met, she a month younger than me. I graduated early from high school and so we were separated but we carried on a long distance relationship until in my second year at college, when she broke up with me. I never saw her again and didn't find out what happened to her for 25 years. One fine Memorial Day weekend in 2001, overcome by a wave of nostalgia, I started googling old classmates and I found an email listing for her dad at his company and so I sent him an email to ask how she was doing. He didn't reply for months. Then 9/11 happened - remember the national trauma of that moment? The day after 9/11, in that moment of national trauma, her dad decided to get back in touch by email and gave me his phone number and said I could call him. I called and we re-connected and then he told me she had developed schizophrenia not long after we had broken up, and this was sort of being controlled with medication. He gave me her phone number and I did call her up ... and it was... sad. Her voice was different, jittery, a bit nervous, and high pitched, and I really didn't know what to say to her. She used to have such a calm, low, assured, and husky voice, like..... Lauren Bacall, and just as slim and beautiful. Sometimes your memories are best left alone.....
