Hi Rob, great video and very informative. Is reaming holes and tapered tenons essential? Would straight tenons and holes work as well?
@crouchvalewoodcraft16 днів тому
Yes, straight tenons can be used with a straight drilled hole. The advantage of a tapered tenon is that it tightens as you apply load/sit in the chair. So if the wood should shrink, the leg shouldn't become loose. But with wood that is good and dry, a straight tenon is fine and the shoulder will hold the leg in place. Thanks for watching.

Wow that jig for turning tapered tenons is genius! You could make another jig to make precise straight tenons too I suppose! 👏🏻

Good video Rob. Is there any wood you wouldn't recommend using for a stick chair?
@crouchvalewoodcraft10 місяців тому
Thanks Vic. I've not used anything that I would never use again but then haven't used lots of different woods. I have made some seats using larch which can leak resin in hot weather, which isn't ideal. But any straight grained, strong, hardwood is fair game.
