I just got around to listening to this one and I couldn't stop, this is one of the best stories I've heard in a long, long time. And perfectly narrated by Ian as usual, thank you so much for bringing us such an amazing story.

A little useless history connection here: Some might interpret in the first story that Chambers predicted the war with Germany, ie World War I, but he was probably alluding to an incident that actually happened in the 1880s. I believe it was the Samoan Islands, but I don't remember for sure off hand, but the US and the Germans had claim to different islands in the same island chain. The Germans started making aggressive overtures as though they may take the American islands by force. The US Navy at the time had been so neglected after the end of The Civil War, that it was determined that the Navy would have no ability to appose the Germans if they tried to attack. This prompted Congress to start giving some, albeit limited, funds to develop modern (for the time) battleships and cruisers to protect US overseas interests. Nothing ever came of the incident as far as hostilities, but I imagine Chambers was picturing a Naval battle with the Germans in the Pacific rather than the continental battles that happened historically. I just found that kind of interesting.

I wonder if lavender is similar. I don’t like lavender flavored teas, it tastes like soap to me. So I wonder if it has aldehyde compounds or if I just subconsciously associate lavender scents with soap. 🤷‍♂️ I do like cilantro though, I don’t get a soap taste

I've tried to get into Lovecraft since I was a teenager. Even with a co-author it still sucks. On and on and on and on. Much ado about nothing.

So many of these are favorites, but I still think the first one tops them all (Phantom Coach). I just adore the atmosphere the author created, along with the near-film-like visuals described so clearly, I nearly felt it was happening to me. You can't go wrong with a setting on the moors, especially in winter. Very few writers can still manage this today. Also perfectly narrated, as always. We are so spoiled.

Some years ago there was a daytime interior illustration of an open-air mausoleum or crypt showing a wall of closed drawers. What video was that? I can't seem to find it anymore.

@HorrorBabble no im afraid not, except to say it wouldn't have been anything about vampires or werewolves. Most likely skeletons or ghosts and maybe possibly cthulu and at least 5 years or more ago, possibly as far back as 2014 after my mother died.. I know thats not much to go on. I'm looking manually right now, starring 5 years ago. I appreciate your responsiveness! It was a very poignant picture for me and the one you found is awfully close if not the right video.

Ok I dont know what I'm talking about. I found my original comment from exactly 5 years ago and it was indeed this video. For some reason searching through HorrorBabble videos never came up with this video, but finally we have indeed found it. Thanks for your help!

I have my suspicions this is Pont1ns in Camber Sands. Each time I visited, I was struck by the lack of basic hygiene and many times, shared my chalet with many other creatures, who whilst unseen, plagued me for some time after. Most eerily, a good friend wrote her name on the dirty chalet window. When she rented the same chalet the next year, terrifyingly the name reappeared in the same place, same window. It was almost as if no one had bothered to clean them in a year.

You would be a perfect narrator for "The Castle of Otranto" by Horace Walpole - 1764; considered the first gothic (horror) novel in western literature... as far as I know from Wikipedia.
