I really enjoyed this video, Michael. Very useful. These are the exact stories I want to write and draw myself and have faced many of the same struggles you address.

Oh! I’m so glad it well helpful! It’s a great resource. I look through it all the time. I hope it helps you get things going.

I've been not quite playing solo rpgs for a couple of years. I haven't really figured out a good flow. I've always been good at notetaking, later discovered that this was ADHD. It's an interesting mind shift, play sessions as outlining. I would always go all out, use up all my dopamine, then burn out quick.

I think it just takes time. I take for granted how much I’ve learned by writing books now for decades. Make it more about having fun!

Outside the day job, do you have a certain # of hours you set aside for personal projects each day?
@Michael.Regina17 днів тому
I generally get about 2-4 hours a day in on other projects. The comic usually takes up all of that.

Great advice! Your perspective can really change how you feel about your situation. I also liked how you mentioned not filling your time with other art endeavors like commissions, for so long I've felt like I had to want to do commissions, because that's what artists on the internet do, but only recently I've realized it's ok that I don't actually enjoy doing them and would prefer to put my energy into my own projects (although the extra freelance income here and there is still helpful)
@Michael.Regina19 днів тому
Oh yeah. I was pretty relieved when I jettisoned commissions from my pursuits. They are fun sometimes, but I felt that focusing on books would matter much more in the long run. I still do some once in awhile, but not when I’m in production mode on a book. Hope you’re doing well!
@alzamonart14 днів тому
I've been also staying away from commissions even if I could go and draw them all the same. For the asking prices I've seen around, I'd rather keep freelancing on my field of expertise (tech) and keep practicing art without the pressure of profiting off it.

I’ve been going through this exact thing for the past couple years. Thought I needed to start an art based business, which I closed a year later because it took so much of my time, energy, and income to run. The right perspective is worth so much.
@Michael.Regina21 день тому
Yes, it does. I've basically tried to stay focused on making things and I'll let the results come at their own pace.
@amandamartinez-qy9ty21 день тому
Absolutely agree. I love creating. But glad my day job pays the bills. I think that not having to stress on money gives me more freedom to create what I want.
@Michael.Regina21 день тому
Yes. And one day if your creative work really takes off, you'll know it's time to make that jump. Too many try to force it.
@rnelson988022 дні тому
Great video. I had all the same feelings and came to similar conclusions. I had been (effectively) unemployed for many months and couldn't settle on a project because I had put too much pressure on myself to choose and complete one that could bring income. Now that I have a day job, it's harder to find any time, but I feel a LOT less pressure from, and generally more interest in, creation/design/art projects.
@Michael.Regina21 день тому
It's tough, but I am glad you're feeling less pressure! I hope you can get making progress on your projects. Keep doing whatever you can each day!

Thank you man this came at the perfect motivating time. Just got a new job and things have changed a lot. Lost some motivation but now I feel pumped to push thru. Hope to make my first graphic novel soon and publish it online and physical! Love how you prioritize your family, as a dad I completely agree with that! Will be checking out your stuff shortly! Thanks again

I'm in a polar opposite place. Right now, I need to learn how to take advantage of the fact that I DON'T have a lot of bad stress in my life right now. I don't want to waste my time, but I do sometimes anyway.
@Michael.ReginaМісяць тому
Do you have much of a system in place? If not, start there. This was a really cool video I saw today that lays out a pretty basic process for organizing yourself toward your goals: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/o3hhrauBsK-Qrpc.html

Great advice, sir. I will certainly keep this in mind, especially these days when times are rough. I kind of think it is a compounding interest, where I do a small amount of my personal projects to create 1 big project in the long run; it really helps, though.

Hey! I had the same idea and went through a months long journey until I found your channel, and got many of my questions answered. So, I thought it was a good idea to share some of my findings. In my experience, the system I used color (unintentionally) much of my writing, so I'd leaned on the more generic, narrative and rules light rpgs. I studied a whole metric ton of systems and always found some hard limits or a flavor that would be hard to remove, but something tells me that I found a gem: Kismet. It's my go-to, and uses only one stat for all your rolls (a d20). You can use *any* supplement or setting that you want, plus the solo mode is built-in. Still, to accomplish the retcon you mention, I use a second oracle (mythic, crge or matt jackson's 3d6 oracle, an elegant and simple idea). Add to that some random tables and inspiration for the setting, and I can play (and write) almost anything with little friction. The same guy that made Kismet (Cezar Capacle) also released another generic rules light system last year that seems very interesting, called Push. Apart from those, other options are Freeform Universal 2e, Loner 2e, Mini Six and Risus. Anyway, hope that I could contribute in any way - your videos helped me so much. Thanks!
