To be honest, i prefer the happy ending. They deserve love. Not a loop

Its vital both to have classic stories which express the traditional canon of human morality and history, as well as stories like Pan's Labyrinth which invert those traditions to emphasize the rejuvenating necessity of creativity and disobedience, but to criticize Disney for not doing that in the first place with the classic is stories is wrong. Patriarchal order is tyrannical and evil, but another dimension of it is stabilizing and productive and seeing only one half of this dimensionality over another is a surefire route to see the world through the lens of a classic antagonist. Mind you, Pan's Labyrinth would not have its power if it wasn't able to leverage the power of canonical religious ideas, and its very existence is the by-product of a society whose traditional 'patriarchal' canon has always emphasized the regenerative utility of disobedience. Even the Bible has called for rejecting authority when necessary. Rejecting authority isn't against 'antiquated' traditional thought but to express something thats already built into western thought already present in the Disney stories of the past. Wasn't the America that produced classic Disney films also the America that fought tyranny in the 20th century?

Videos like these undermine film journalism, you almost never see film journalism get more sophisticated than the takes of this video.

Funny you would mention depth and character work because I personally believe Reservoir Dogs has more impressive character work than something like Inglorious Basterds. The character in IB are flat two-dimensional caricatures with no depth. Compare that to the cast in Reservoir Dogs: Mr. White and Mr. Orange's relationship is extremely impressive with so much weight to it. And it gets better upon rewatches. Maybe the movie could've used more length, Tarantino himself kinda pointed to his desire to remake RD at some point. But the character work is still so good through implications and what we are shown outright alone.

I love how you put that..about pulling one string and seeing what lights up on the web! That phrase, to me, sums up how poetry can venture past literature into the realm of mysticism, touching not only minds and hearts of the readers , but also speak in symbology of the spirit/soul. Excellent video!❤❤❤

A lot of these problems exist in VR right now too. For the focal length problem, the solution is supposedly vari-focal lenses and eye tracking. The focal length will automatically correct itself for whatever you are looking at. Idk if that could ever find its way into 3d glasses for movies because it sounds really expensive, but if it does it would be really cool to check out.

The official subs are bad, made worse by the fact that they were trying to speak old aristocratic Japanese. Unofficial ones are a bit better. They should have done a better job like most animé. The fake Portuguese accent English just cringe. Mariko interferes too much often without a good reason. After the initial meeting It's a horrible way to teach someone, which was needed for someone in his place.
@luz97192 дні тому
As an interpreter I can honestly say it is truly a very difficult job, you must understand the nuances and deeper implications of each sentence. In order to do that you need to learn about each culture, what they consider appropriate and inappropriate or offensive. It's very interesting. What Mariko is doing here is considered omission and addition though, one must not alterate the message, but she's playing a politics game here. I've had this happen to me, a woman in Spanish says "Te lo agradezco de mil corazones, mi vida. Dios te bendiga" which I translated as "Thank you very much, God bless you" and I do not consider it to be an omission because it is a way to say thanks that is kind of over the top (very intimate and something you would only say to a close relationship in English but is normal in Spanish) and difficult to translate. So yeah, translating ≠ interpreting.
@luz97192 дні тому
For those who don't know Spanish that translates literally to "I thank you from a thousand hearts (with all my heart), my love. God bless you" or something like that lol

Most cinema commentators, in an irony's not lost on me kind of way, parasitically latch onto whatever 'content' they're discussing, adding little to nothing, merely extracting for clicks, likes, attention, whatev; yet you, here, with this 'essay' prove to be a symbiont - congratulations and thanks for sharing. Keep up your good and touching work.

@johncampbell11522 дні тому
In your next video, you might indicate that across the Channel, Gustave Flaubert perfected the technique, known by critics as “le discours indirect libre,” or free indirect discourse. His novel “Madame Bovary” (1857) is the perfect example of this style. Austen, writing four decades earlier, came to his attention years after she had already brilliantly achieved this. Thank you for your superb video.

People want the shadowy flip side to this movie because they have their own unhealed shadowy aspects of themselves that have not been healed. The movie is beautiful as it is. All men can relate to Pratt’s character and insanity/ love drove him to make a choice…. It was that or death and he took a chance. It was the perfect choice and the universe itself healed the situation with their love for each other….. perfect.

Nerdwriter might not cover many shows, but each time he does, it's ones that goes beyond what's hot at the moment. Like Succession, Shogun really reveals the depth, the limitations, and the weight of language. It truly shows the messiness of human connection and how much we disregard everyday. While AI translation is undeniably helpful, I do fear that we could loss the actual intention behind each single word choice.

When Ozo cuts to the vase (and he does this twice, Unlike other transitions), he is using the Japanese concept of Ma (間). It is a philosophical concept of the empty space between the edges, between the beginning and end, the space in between literally meaning gap, space, or pause. It is also the empty space where divine (human emotional) energy can exist. In the space Ozu creates it is natural to feel it is where Noriko's sadness and pensive feelings go. That may be but it is really for the audience. If that is what they will put there, that is honored. Myself I put her feelings and the father's and my own feelings there, simply because Ozu has given a space for that and more.

When I saw this scene in the theater I was a littke kid and I was traumatized. I later became a horror fan at the age of 16. At the age of 26 on April 24th 2024 at 7pm I went to the movie theaters to see Spider-Man 2 on 35mm. Its a movie I know very well but hadn't seen in a long time and because of that I had figured that when this scene played and I got scared as a small kid it was because I was a dumb baby. Wuen I saw this scene again I was awestruck. It was even more intense than I remembered and you are just locked in it for such a long time. It was breath taking.

Wished it ended on the new planet, you hear Lawrence narrating, then it shows an old Chris Pratt on the new planet: They lived their long life on the space ship, but as Lawrence was dying, they decided to put Pratt in the pod so someone makes it. And the narration is just old Pratt with Jen's iPad hearing what she wrote.

Interesting. BTW, the aesthetic of this piece reminds me to the one of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. I remember that at least part of the same view on nature is also present in that other film, as well.
