Awesome video. Super detailed and I feel like if I had these tools already I would attempt this repair.... But for now a solder iron and these switches are going to bring me over the cost of a new one from Amazon....

It's a tough call sometimes. Unfortunately, sometimes it is just better to buy a new one

Very good video. Where can I found this PCB ?

I watched your KiCad plug in video and saw this one. Been through the mouse button issue a few times. Last time I used Kailh Red GM 4.0 switches as a replacement, probably from the same discussions you read, and they have worked great. PS: Thanks for the plug in video, I'll be trying a few of those.

Thanks for the feedback! How do you feel using the Kailh red switches?

Great video. These i2c expander are an awesome integrated circuit. For educational the pcf8574 is a good choice, but, if you are developing a product, search for more recent part numbers, I think the PCF of not recomendded for new designers. The TCA9548, for example, is a good choice. Nice video.
@TerminalCuriosityEEМісяць тому
Thanks for the great feedback! I agree, the PCF8574 is better suited to education than production. I mainly chose this because it suits an upcoming project I'm working on in the background
@DisorderedArray27 днів тому
The sx1509 is also I2C and has some very powerful features, but with the downside of using a QFN footprint.

Pads are reusable: just use double-sided tape, it costs a pretty penny
@Markus_BernМісяць тому
Take an old toothbrush, 70% alcohol or something similar containing alcohol and thoroughly clean all the contacts on the boards, switches, buttons, solder points, wheel and so on. This really helps and physically replacing parts is the last thing you need to do.

If you are doing this kind of repair more often and have a soldering gun at hand, there is easy and fast method to desolder mouse switches. Watch this - ukposts.info/have/v-deo/o4CXq4Fke4mapGw.html
@hit-757Місяць тому
BTW, to quickly desolder multiple pins at once you can use some thick copper wire and bridge them first.
@hit-757Місяць тому
I used to replace the switches in my mice. Got bored and tired of it. Bought one with optical switches. It fixed my problems with double clicking.
@notsurtМісяць тому
Desoldering needles are a cheap way to desolder though hole components, though I'll normally just do the same as you despite having both desoldering needles and a desoldering gun. I don't know about plumber's putty, but blutack does a passable job.

Another great plugin, although currently broken in v8 (in work), is kicad-action-scripts which includes a way to easily add thermal relief holes for your PCB.

That was an easy repair... but in reality most of them are. It's insane how often devices get thrown out as e-waste. I hope your well explained content makes more people curious enough to try it for themselves & recover their broken devices. Cheers!
@TerminalCuriosityEE2 місяці тому
I hope so too! its a shame how much of this stuff gets thrown in the bin when it can actually be fixed. The owner of this camera was very grateful for this job, as she couldn't find an authorised Logitech technician to look at it and apparently the cameras are over $1000 new.

There have been many great comments pointing out that this was recorded in KiCad 6 and the latest release is KiCad 8. That's my mistake, but I have retested all of these plugins on the latest update and they all work as normal except for "Gerber to Order", which seems to be broken. In the mean time, until that plugin is updated, you can use "Fabrication Toolkit" for JLC PCB and it should work fine, even for other PCB manufacturers. There is an alternative called "PCBway fabrication toolkit" for PCBway, but seems this plugin has also broken during the update.
@JosePablo20082 місяці тому
Published two weeks ago and you are using KiCad 6!!!. Come on. Update the video with KiCad 8.

Why doesn't the ruler 0 start from the edge, i see this repeatedly in this kind of electronic hobbyist rulers, is there a reason no one bothers to put the zero at the edge?
@TerminalCuriosityEE2 місяці тому
Great question! Generally, having copper traces so close to the edge isn't good practice for a few reasons. Exposed copper on the edge can have issues with tearing, signal integrity, solder defects, shorting the board against a product chassis, etc. In this case none of those really matter because this is all for aesthetics, but the manufacturer may still flag it if they see it in the gerbers because they don't know the application. I could have probably aligned it to the edge and explained that any defects were acceptable, but honestly it was simpler this way and I don't mind having a small offset when measuring things.

Nice repair!! I look forward to seeing what kind of videos you make next. Just a handy…. Whenever I have a through hole component with short leads, I use a piece of “plumbers putty to hold the component in place for soldering. You have to be particular with the brand you use as the lower quality will leave residue. Thanks for the video. Good luck with future ones!!
@TerminalCuriosityEE2 місяці тому
Thanks for the feedback and the great tip! I'll have to look into plumber's putty for soldering.
@donepearce2 місяці тому
When creating a set of gerbers for JLCPCB, do you still have access to their board population service? I have used that from Easyeda, but with that I can see what parts they stock.
@benwolfe13012 місяці тому
Yes, you just need to manually browse LCSC and find the equivalent part numbers to modify your BOM, then they can do it.
@donepearce2 місяці тому
@@benwolfe1301 That sounds like a huge opportunity for me to screw up...
