This 'Raki' thing is one disgusting drink. I'm a Turk, and I drank that nasty thing millions of times, but without the help of appetizers (meze), I had to rush to the bathroom every time due to its nasty aniseed smell. This is one of those things I would happily leave it to Greeks for them to claim as their greatest inventions ever. Do not try to drink without the proper appetizers!

Ayran has a taste you acquire in time. Kind of Alcohols. The repulsionary feeling will wither away as you drink more and more, and only pleasure wil remain.

This is the same as Greek ouzo. It is called raki in turskish and ouzo in Greek. You got to follow this recipe in order to drink it properly: Add 1/3 raki to the glass. Add 1 ice cube. Then add 2/3 of cold water. It is very important for the water to be cold. Try it again this way. When you start to get drunk after 2 glasses this will give you a very pleasant feeling. Getting drunk with raki is much better than getting drunk with beer or whiskey. Also come for vacations at Greece at least once in your life time, it is a very good place for vacations especially in the Summer :)

You DEFINITELY need to shake it.. and serve chilled. The first time I tried it I wasn't a fan - but now I'm ADDICTED! I literally crave it for breakfast, after meals and before bed! Occasionally I find some brands are a little too cheesy and/or have too much of that distinctive yogurt taste but maybe that's where it's been sat around too long. Luckily here in London you can buy Ayran from local convenience stores and I buy at least one a day!! It's so refreshing, like mint tea, and a great palette cleanser. The Turks know their food and drinks!!

That’s what you get for using a tea cup drinking early in the morning. Next time get yourself a glass, pour the right proportions Raki / water ratio and drink. Endure the first 3 drinks and after you will appreciate the drink.

I would drink that stuff every time, but it's expensive as hell for gallons. It's salty but I got used to it.

Generally speaking you fill 1/10 to 1/4 of your glass with Raki, and the rest with water. Som also put ice on top.
