Tracing helps with accuracy and to study the figure better. You can learn from it and always add but it does help in tandom with using refference. In all, a useful tool with studying your subject. Hell, I trace my own work to tranfer to better illustration boards and canvas for painting❤ 🖌️

Great video, Marc! Do you have any tips on juggling projects and studies, for us semi-professionals in desperate needs of keeping our portfolios up to date while still doing studies to improve our skills?

Tracing just for education is always be the recommendation to learn shape. stuff looks like that for a reason if you cannot logically figure it out how it does certain pattern, trace it to learn how it works.

this is very helpful because i am terrible with proportions

Haven't seen the video or comments at all and have zero experience in drawing anything but I think I know why it's good to trace By tracing you learn how to employ principles that the original artist used that you then get to use yourself as you familiarize yourself with which brush strokes to make and techniques to use. BOOM

These are really neat. I use a mix of both~ I use the cylinder for the ribs, then the rhombus for the female hips and the box shape for the male characters’ hips (unless they’re more on the feminine side body-wise, then I just use a narrower soft rhombus). I am seeing realtime how (like facial guidelines) using a variation of them with different characters could change the structure of the character. For example, the first style makes more angular, “strong-looking” characters and the second makes more shapely, softer-looking ones. Mixing it makes, well, a mixture of the two. Ect ect. It’s pretty amazing. ect. It’s pretty amazing.

I have no trouble drawing figures. I am a bit too obsessed with drawing muscles. What I do have trouble is with foreshortening. I have no clue how those manga artists do it. And hands… we don’t talk about the hands 😂
It's sad that this style looks awfully like AI art now.. I'm really worried about my art career

Tracing to improve natural skill = good Tracing to cheat = bad A very Greg Land a very popular and famous Marvel artist is accused of this often because he can pump out 22 full pages a week. It is hard to not see how this may be true with all the comparisons, he is also accused of tracing real images from TV and pornogrophy.

Long time viewer marc, I truly enjoyed todays video on sharing with us three different ways on drawing the bodies for drawing practice. I am pretty decent with enviorment creation simplitic wise. I am liking the three methods ya shared with us today. I'll defently start my journey with the box method then slowly move on up to the third set. Thanks so much for sharing your tips with no fluff and bs just straihgt to the point as it should be as well. Also you've been motivating me to get back into physical drawing again slowly these past few years to.

i did this ONCE on stream, and i got SO much negative feedback from random viewers. i only did it, because 1 viewer asked what method i would use to do it. which I never trace, but if i had to, i showed him the example. during the process, random people coming in, started talking sh*t about me and my art. This hurt me, even if it was just an example. i tried explaining , but it was too late by then. the chat was arguing back n forth with one another. Marc, how would you have handled it?

I've been working really hard this last half year to try and learn anatomy, proportions, etc, but I was really struggling to sort of put it all together into a cohesive and clean way. I did a stick figure like foundation similar to the third method just to pose and measure it out, then followed along with the second method on top of it here, and it all just clicked together so nicely all of the sudden. I mean, it didn't come together as well as the one in the video, and I haven't tried a lot of different poses yet, but it's still a very passable looking mannequin. Really appreciate these tutorials you're always posting. Thank you!

I like the methods you listed and have in the few times I have recently drawn anything. Trying to work out more the oval/egg like shape for the head, bigger for the ribs with the marker for where they come up to the center, the bowl for the hips and then the limbs. proportions are pretty good, after I drilled those into myself. I just need to take it to the next steps of fleshing out, and value rendering.

The cylinder method has always been my method ever since I started learning anatomy, I feel very validated now
