It had nothing to do with torque. Diesel engines benefited from some very favourable rules and this Diesel engine made more power than most of the gasoline engines it ran against. Naturally aspirated engines had smaller restrictor plates and turbocharged ones were limited to 7psi, while Diesels were allowed to run 28psi of boost. Torque was irrelevant, the Diesels were making more power, that's why they were faster. The Diesel engines were at the limit of what the materials could handle, while the gasoline engines could rev much higher and/or run much more boost and make hundreds more horsepower if not for the restrictive rule set. Also no one ever mentions that fuel used on these Diesel engines. Shell provided the Diesel fuel for these and had a cetane rating of 70, compared to road Diesel around 50. When you inject Diesel with a cetane rating of 70 at nearly 3000psi, for all intents and purposes it behaves thermodynamically like a gasoline engine (fuel burns pretty much instantaneously). It's not like the Diesel engine in your Golf at all.

I'm sad about Audi... My S6 C8 (55 TDI) engine died on 70k km few days ago...

Another excellent production with very professional narration and pictorial content. It is also quite interesting to know that Toyota produced a convertible because Sean Connery was too tall to fit in it. I have a recommendation in mind but I don't want to mention it because I reckon in a week or two the next episode will be better than what I am thinking, after the great surprise this episode was.

I bet every single bolt on this car was torque to yield and one time use. This is coming from a mk4 jetta owner having to do an engine swap. The only thing not torque to yield on that stupid motor seems to be the oil filter cover

Right now I’ve been modifying rc cars you would find in Walmart (rebuilding the gearboxes, adding extra drive motors, increasing steering angle, etc) to make them as powerful as possible. im an inspiring mechanical engineer, and hope to work at EMD or GE on their big diesel electric locomotives someday. do I have something going here?

I grew up with TDIs, learned to drive in a 79 Rabbit TDI, drove to uni in a 04 Passat TDI, bought a Golf wagon TDI later and even got it bought back from VW after the diesel scandal. Too bad really, but have to wonder where TDI technology would be today without that scandal. 😢

I attended the Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta for 5 of the annual event between 2007 & 2012. It was as amazing a weekend each time as could be. my recall of it yields the observation that the C6 Corvettes & the Panoz were the eye candy / what everyone was "Oooing" & looking at all weekend but there was an aura around the Audi teams & these Diesel powered beasts which was tangible. The 3-4 TDI cars were in a seemingly race of their own more than once. Simply dominating race cars , the vibe was who will win & which position did you get after the Audi team ,of course.... occasionally you get a car that is incomparable & for this window of time in history,these Audi were top racecar during turn of the millennium 2000s.

It's an odd number so the firing order would have to be one-at-a-time, right? Seizure in two weeks.

The way you narrate the epic story, from the 'small motor company we might have heard of' to the 'man had not landed on the moon', ie. mechanical engineering without AutoCAD, right through to the addition of the rear wing and eventual racing success at Daytona and LeMans really makes this one a great historical automotive documentary to watch and learn from.

Wonderful! Thanks again. I also liked the Audi, Mazda and Mustang stories, and wondered if that was it for this channel. Now there's a new release, it makes sense to watch the other two. Because this channel is an ongoing project so it's worth watching all of them, as peculiar as that might sound. a small anecdote I heard about the 917 (don't know if it's true): Apparently the car was supposed to have a glas window over the rear large cooling fan. However, in testing the fan sucked so much air that the glas just shattered. So they just got rid of it
