This is the first honeyeater species I learned to identify while working on my PhD thesis at Melbourne Uni. In Victoria, they are important pollinators of some of the native mistletoes.

Hillarious outake. You reali,ze that despite all this molly was free to come and go as she pleased? That when They came to sieze her she was actuwlly out huntung and they had to come back another time? That when they took her she got locked up with no freedom of choice for the firzt time in her life? U k know not everything is black and white... Theyve had molly for years..ridiculous to claim she hadnt had 'proper care'
@birdbites
@birdbites 25 днів тому
With all respect you need to educate yourself a little bit more on this. Firstly the bird was not truly free to come and go, because it had developmental issues brought about by the way it was raised - it will always be reliant on people and cannot freely survive in the wild, as it would have been able to had it been brought up by actual wildlife carers. Just because it's not in a cage doesn't mean it is free. When these people found it they should have contacted a vet or trained wildlife carer. They're clearly out of their depth and at one stage were letting it drink milk from one of their dogs. That would have a bad effect nutritionally as well as teaching it that mammals and dogs can be trusted. Why didn't some natural instinct tell them that alone was wrong, and not in the bird's best interest? It really annoys me that they could invest all this time in marketing the bird and making money from it, and not researching how to look after it properly, or how to get in touch with someone who can. One of the biggest dangers to this, apart from the damage to the bird, is the example it sets. There are already people taking magpies from the bush trying to imitate this ( see facebook.com/photo/?fbid=839410041561088&set=a.638816824953745) There's no ornithologist or real wildlife carer that I know of that is endorsing what these people did, or what the government did in returning the bird to them. This is purely a triumph of opinion and politics over facts and science. In fact most of the comments I've seen in favour of the bird going back are based on emotion with no consideration for what the knock on effects of this will be; or they're based on people's own gripes with the government so they identify with these people. None of it is a rational or considered approach to the situation. And of course the bird should not be euthanised it should be kept in a wildlife reserve. My prediction is that dog will kill it, based on the way it knocks it around in some of their "play" sessions.

The common thread I've noticed online amongst those who object to the bird being taken by the government is that they see the government as some kind of authoritarian ogre, and the way they feel about that prevents them from looking at this rationally. So here's a few facts, see if you can assess them objectively without letting your perception of the government get in the way: 1 The bird was found in the wild as a chick, in a dangerous situation 2 It was not given to a trained wildlife carer even though it could have been 3 It has not been raised with, or taught, the skills to survive in the wild 4 Although it can roam it is dependent on people and does not have the skills to independently survive 5 Magpies are a protected species and it is illegal to take them from the wild. 6 The family made the bird famous on social media and have profited commercially from it 7 Although native animals like this Magpie, can make good pets, by law this can only happen when the animal is sourced from domesticated stock and where that species is permitted to be kept 8 If the government did not take the bird, and by returning it, they are setting the example that what this family has done is acceptable. This could lead to many other people doing the same thing, which would be disastrous for our wildlife In my opinion it is as simple as that, and in order to see it you just have to think of the consequences for all our wildlife, and not worry about what your own feelings are towards the government, and what they represent to you

What does Zelensky and Putin think is the correct thing to do here with Molly the Magpie? If it can not be decided at that level, then get together a quick intergovernmental panel under UN auspices, with executive powers, and, in the fullness of time, the correct outcome can be established. going forward, on mature reflection FFS.

You may have a valid argument but it’s shot down by the fact that this bird was free to leave at all times and WAS NOT caged as it is now . By all accounts it was healthy , free , able to associate with his own kind and find a mate at will . So leave it alone , return it to its rightful free existence and kindly butt out . With respect .

I see this all the time in the comments of the Facebook ads I tend to get for conservation charities. People accusing anyone who is interested in conservation of being "extremists" or "greenie terrorists" and other ludicrous, unhinged accusations. The reality of the situations is that many normal people are passionate about protecting the environment, because it brings them peace and pleasure to be out in it, and they recognise that the severity and rate of destruction are unnecessary. We have options, but we just tend to pick the easiest or most profitable ones ...which also happen to be the most damaging. We can still make good profits and look after people while protecting the environment if we make the right choices.

I live in Toowoomba on Mount Lofty and while i am now in my 80,s I have been around the Currswongs here most of my life . They are clowns . There is a family of 24 birds that live in my area and they are at times all in my at yard at once . They love to play in trees that offer a large canopy . I offer them two water points in my yard which are made of concrete but very shallow. During hot weather they will stand in the water and bathe . They sre offered fresh clean water every day ...My curraeongs are spoilt as they enjoy a little beef mince to eat . They share my area mainly with pee wee , green cat birds , a range of psrrot and honey ester species and a satin bower bird that had been here some years now spendng much time building a new bower or repairing an old Bower. Our lives would be very dull without birds in Australia...

Just a quick note to anyone living in The Avenues: my problem isn't with you - I'm very glad you've got somewhere to live that you like, and I'm not suggesting the place be dismantled or anything stupid like that. What I am saying is, as we go forward, some things which in my opinion characterise that development should not be allowed in future developments. I think mature trees should have to be retained, and this would require larger block sizes. I also think some areas need to be set aside and never developed - just kept for their use for wildlife. And I think we need more urban renewal and inner city apartments which would have the twin benefits of reducing urban sprawl and economically revitalising the CBD. None of this is required now under the current planning regime, which is why I am running and hope to get into Council to change that. This is not about anyone who lives in The Avenues - it is just about how we want our region to look and function into the future.
@Vicki-rd3mb
@Vicki-rd3mb 3 місяці тому
Land clearing is part of development for the region. This creates jobs, brings money into the region. With your statement about the number of people arriving here over the next few years, where are they supposed to live? It just not feasible to be criticizing developers who have met all the Council guidelines to make homes for people to live in. Its lovely you live on hectares and choose to do so; may I ask are you planning to allow people to stake out areas on your land for tents or caravans to assist with the population growth in the region. I don't think so!! I couldn't support anyone on our Council who wasn't forward thinking and who obviously doesn't have any understanding of the need for estates like The Avenues in Highfields. Read the infrastructure, planning and covenant guidelines as the Developers did their due diligence in meeting all required standards. As to your comments stating about small lots all crammed together, maybe it would be wise to have another look as many Lots have double sheds, plus double garages, pools, cabanas etc, on their Lots. Smaller Lots are made available for those who are downsizing and who find these Lots more affordable, for their needs. Sorry Scot, we don't need someone with blinkered vision on our council. What we need are candidates with a measured approach who understand growth, one who understands the need to maintain some wildlife, and balances this with an understanding of the importance of sustainability and knows how to work with this while maintaining our regions green space.
@birdbites
@birdbites 3 місяці тому
The problem is Vicki we don't have vegetation protection laws in the Toowoomba Regional Council at the moment and we don't have protections for green spaces. The Green Infrastructure Strategy hasn't even been implemented after 4 years, let alone the postponing of the planning scheme. As I said in my video at 2:10 we need development, but it has to be in a way that preserves many of the things you are actually calling for. Right now we don't have the framework to ensure those things that you want will happen, and recent events like the clearing of mature trees in Reis Road, Aphra Street and the site where the Avenues is, is proof of that. All I am calling for is development laws comparable to those that other councils in SE Queensland have. Builders and developers still function and make a profit in those councils, just as they will be able to here when we do get those reforms. If anyone is telling you otherwise they are either mistaken or deceiving you. I do think I have the balance right in my perspective on it all, but I respect that you don't see it that way.
@Vicki-rd3mb
@Vicki-rd3mb 3 місяці тому
really find some of your comments regarding The Avenues as very misleading and untrue Scot. As a resident in the avenues our Lot is large with a pool, dual access and an small orchard.
