One advantage to thorium reactors is that they do not need to be built near large bodies of water. There is no need to have a large amount of water needed to drain to waste as a buffer for mitigating a meltdown.

A video idea: Could you please make a video about the Italian mafia dropping nuclear (and chemical) waste at the coasts of Italy and Somalia? Here is a wiki link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxic_waste_dumping_by_the_%27Ndrangheta (to be honest, I failed to find free sources, but I am pretty sure you know better how to search for more and free sources. It would be good to know what it is talking about exactly; how much, how dangerous, where it is now and how we plan to recover and put it into a safe and contained environment. Thanks in advance)

Would it be more cost-effective if the process were scaled up?

So of the three volunteers, as of 2024 Alexei Ananenko and Valeri Bespalov are apparently still alive (or were in April, contact with them is sporadic due to the Ukraine-Russian war. Boris Baranov passed away from heart disease in 2005. On the miners 40000 of them died within a decade, 70000 of them are disabled with permanent injuries from various radiation related illnesses.

The blue pillar was actually there, the updraft from the fire was carrying high gamma irradiated ash straight up. While it did diffuse eventually, the concentration in that up draft caused the cherenkov effect in the AIR. It stopped as the fire was put out. In the weird circles I was in back then this was used as a proof Godzilla's atomic breath weapon would indeed glow blue in open air if concentrated enough, and we used that to calculate how radioactive it had to be. (according to my 10 year old math 2200Gy)

a little lore background. All that tech you ran across is prewar, the time the main character (you) came from. I know this comment is a bit late, and I am not sure if anyone helped you out with that tidbit. The deal is the world moved to nuclear power real heavy once oil started to run dry. Best thing to do is hit a wikki for some more of the background.

Nuclear calling other people liars. It's too funny. TEPCO lied about three meltdowns for three months at Fukushima. LOL.

Peculiarly, here in the US, nuclear power is something that people on both sides of the now very severe political divide in the US can agree on in 2024. It's surprising just how much consensus there is right now. It's easier to build them in some ways because in the US, being made to live near a coal fired power plant is about as popular as a fart in a broken elevator, and natural gas and oil are not all that far behind. Edit: typos...

One statistic I did not see talked about is the pollution that these so called "clean energy" solutions emit during and after they have reached end of life! A huge issue with them is while they will claim they recycle, they dont because either the components are difficult or impossible to extract from the recycled material. Because of that they are discarded, either in land fills or otherwise just stacked up somewhere. Where they set because most of the components do not bio-degrade and the materials that do are toxic and leach into the soil and water table where they contaminate those elements and make them unusable and even dangerous for thousands of years! Even if they did the right thing and actually recycled these solutions, they are not readily reusable or able to be put back in service in new systems because they have lost their ability to provide the necessary output to make them viable. Not only that but because of the complexity in recycling anything made from those materials will have to be much more costly, even with subsidies from a government just to break even and where the people are paying for this in the end. Then there is the elephant in the room/conversation that is never talked about. No one is even considering the power source that those like Nikola Tesla discovered and a number of inventors have after him. Where governments and big business have stole, or otherwise purchased the rights and patents and hidden the technology and then we are lead to believe its untrue or a conspiracy theory and is never seen the light of day and never will unless people are made aware of these technologies and a big enough group of people demand their governments and these corrupt companies release the information. There is as a MATTER OF FACT, sources of power that are cheap to create but because of that there is no profit in them, so they are hidden from us!

"Was there even a nuclear explosion or did they just fake it to get us down there to experiment on us?" looks around "OK never mind!". Priceless 😀
