After watching this video I only have one question - what about Canonical and their take on CLAs? Sure, their CLA also look shady that they can use your code you license to them (you don't sign rights off it!) in proprietary stuff they develop, but I'm curious.

I was a freeloader for a decade or so. Then I started my own business, and now I financially contribute very generously to all the open source (free software) projects my business has come to rely upon.

Times are repeating. IBM, M$, Google, Yahoo, and others did this 20 years ago and now they're doing it to a new generation. I'm waiting for Oracle to by JavaScript just to complete the treachery.

Corporate Open Source works best when the software is mantained by a company that uses it to operate their business or services, rather than it being their main source of revenue.

Everything changes... the only constant is the gullibility of the general public when it comes to things like new technologies lol This AI wave will burn a lot of fingers. It's like when hardware capabilities were increasing massively every year... invest in the wrong tech and in months, even weeks, along comes something better and yours is worthless in comparison.

i am not an experienced PC Builder, but there are two reasons to push air out instead of in. 1: Dust, pushing air in also pushes dust in. Arguably dust can be pulled in by the vacum created. 2: Reducing airpressure in an environment has an great cooling effect. I would be interested to hear your other peoples opinions on this?

One thing add here. Some of these now not open source projects had great devs contributing to that project and once you pull the rug these people will stop working on that project so usually what happens is that the project/software will get worse and worse over time and will also fall behind because the big corps have a hard time adopting to new trends.

If Windows irks you so much, you can just install your favourite Linux distribution instead of it. As for performance, keep in mind Pi is ARM and the mini PC is x86-64 of AMD64 or whatever. That can make a big difference. For example I used to run a bunch of Docker services on a Pi 4 and when I tried to install OpenVPN server, I found it was a tremendous headache to get it to run on ARM. I ended up running it from my AMD64 HTPC instead of ARM Pi because it wasn't worth the headache.

I don't count Ubuntu as one of the good guys anymore. On Windows you get constantly hassled to use OneDrive/Edge/Teams. On Ubuntu you get constantly hassled to use their paid security update nonsense. Time to switch to Mint forever.

Corporate OpenSource is an oximoronic phrase. Corporations exists for profits, OpenSource exists for the spread of information. The idea that both can co-exist is co-existing in contradiction. The need for an ever growing profit by corporate stake holders will always beat out any reason for OpenSource distribution.

Much of the open source code on the Internet is actually the intellectual property of large corporations which were unaware their employees were developing it at work using company resources. If corporate managers were to cross-reference lists of employees with developers working on open source projects and then compare the timestamps of source code posting they could develop evidence to prove their ownership of the code.

I'm not sure what I just watched, it sounds like you're saying coders like to write code for free and never want to make money from it but the greedy suits take this free code and turn it into business to milk money from, is that right? I'm just trying to understand the rug pull issue, if you created the software shouldn't it be your right to charge for it and if people forked it wouldn't they just be stealing your work/intellectual property.
@JeffGeerling
@JeffGeerling 15 годин тому
The sad thing is many open source developers write the code, then when they go to submit their changes, are forced to sign a CLA to assign the rights to the code to the company. Then later, the company can use the rights to unilaterally change the license to something the developer may or may not have wanted.

@JeffGeerling
@JeffGeerling 15 годин тому
I never said Red Hat Enterprise Linux isn't based on CentOS Stream, just that Red Hat killed CentOS (Stream is not the same thing that was before, regardless of how useful it is for Red Hat's development pipeline or individual users who are still in the EL fold), and they did so in one of the most community-hostile ways they could've done it.
