A superb collective retelling of the events in the Wilderness in early May 1864. Reminds me a bit of the Ardennes. A disadvantaged army consciously chooses a densely wooded topography in order to negate the larger opponents advantages in numbers and firepower. Didn’t really work out for either the Confederates or the Germans.

Thank you Union soldiers for winning that war and preserving freedom and defeating slavery and authoritarianism.

I had many relatives at Sharpsburg under General Lee, including two with A P Hill in this battle. It was a horrible. bloody day for all involved. The Emancipation Proclamation didn't "free the slaves." It only freed the slaves that were in the Confederacy. Not mentioning John Brown Gordon at the sunken road is wrong, IMHO.

I will always wonder why Lee ordered Picket's charge and didn't listen to Longstreet. Was it hubris or desperation to end the war?

All their videos are excellent. I wish people appreciated how unique our civil war was. Thanks for the great history.

I wish they had the funds to rebuild the entire camp walls. From what I can gather, the camp was a lot bigger than the movie or even old photos would suggest. A UKposts channel called The History Underground did a walkthrough of the site, and it was quite large, with the stream dividing the two halves.

Great job y'all! I've heard the Phennie Tapp stories that you can't tell on UKposts and they are spicey! Also thanks for pointing out the 'Lacy Rock'!. I used to be the President of Friends of Wilderness Battlefield and we ran Elwood for the Park for over 20 years ... anything 'Lacy' is near and dear to me!

Was there two months ago. Stopped by the gift shop to look around. Devoid of and quality books at all. * I use to be a book buyer for a regional CW museum and I know what a good selection should look like.

Chris how many times did A P Hill save the day though and how many times did Longstreet waiting for reconnaissance from screening units fall short.

Keep up the great work y’all!! I visited the Wilderness with my folks when I was 7 (33 years ago). My dad got me hooked/addicted to CW history and I’ve studied it and eventually taught it ever since. I’m hoping to take my wife and kids to the Wilderness someday as it Ft Sumter, and Gettysburg are the only ‘major’ CW sites they have left to visit. My 4 year old son is ate up with it as well and actually sits and watches these programs better than he does cartoon. His favorite is Chattanooga Campaign and US Grant. Thank you all!!

140th NY “Rochester Racehorses”, the real heroes of Little Round Top and in the vanguard at the Wilderness, across that killing field and for a time took that trench line. Who know what could have happened with proper flank support

Sorry if I missed it but could someone please explain to a mystified Limey why this is called THE Overland campaign? Isn't Every ACW campaign over land?
@AmericanBattlefieldTrustГодину тому
McClellan's 1862 attempt to take Richmond involved a lot of naval operations. 1864 was strictly by land, thus "overland"

Does anybody know where the 11th Ala Inf was during this day?
@philkaiser602510 годин тому
Pretty sure the Army of the Potomac was led by General George Gordon Meade at that time, and the overall commander of the entire Union army was General Hiram Ulysses Grant ("Ulysses S. Grant" was a mistaken and not real name, and it's weird that Kris, who takes so much pride in being able to know all these general's middle names, doesn't call Grant by his real given name), who chose to attach himself to the Army of the Potomac. Yes, he ordered Meade to do things, but he also ordered the other Union armies to do things as well, like Sherman's, to give one example. I agree with other posters on your initial Overland 160 video that we should not forget the actual General who was in charge of that army, nor should we disregard Grant's actual name for a made-up moniker.

Great tour of the Confederate's side of the battle. Count up how many times their commanders are mentioned vs their opponents. What were the good guys doing? Why is the US army hardly part of this presentation? Lee behaving badly is not all the story.
