It is still a functioning state hospital, but there are parts behind the working hospital that are abandoned. The current hospital is mostly forensic. The “castle” that you see in pictures was greatly damaged by the 1906 quake, and had to be destroyed. You can still find pieces of it behind the buildings that are in use today. When the hospital opened, it was completely self-sufficient, growing its own food, and raising its own livestock. All staff lived on grounds, some in the victorian houses still on Magnolia Drive today. If I can answer anything else, let me know!

the history is that back in late 1800 through early 1900 they used to experiment on normal people or phsychos. one of the experiments were that they would cut open one patient arm and fiddle with the nerves causing there hands to contract and they also tortured patients. another experiment was how they could chop heads off without it bleeding. rip to all of the patients. i am not lying there is blood all over the fuckin place if you think so, also i can make a video there i el was there yesterday and the nsh police came and chased us and me and my friends ran. why do they protect it?!

I've been trying to get into that building for a long time and could never find an easy way to get access. It's a lot easier and safer to get there through skyline park and walk down madrone road. So long as the nsh police have locked all of the gates you're good to go.
