Ordered one of these Dev boards and and excited to start developing a new wearable powered by it. I picked this platform due to the ease of use with zephyr rtos, the fantastic selection of connection options, and the power you get for such low current consumption. Can't wait to get started! Nice to see you active answering questions on UKposts too.

carlescufi

Connecting the pins manually is no longer necessary if you have the DK, it was only required when using the Preview DK. The output of the network core will go to the first COM port exposed to the Host by the DK. As per the prj.conf changes, you need to use CONFIG_BT_DEBUG_MONITOR_UART as described here: docs.zephyrproject.org/latest/guides/bluetooth/bluetooth-dev.html#embedded-hci-tracing

Hi, you mentioned the limitation that you cannot send an event outside a session. If I want to build a BLE push button (or doorbell) which triggers a skill, how can I do that? Is this even possible? Thanks!
Nordic Semiconductor
Nordic Semiconductor 5 днів тому
@Ádám Fodor Sadly we are not aware of any way of easily connecting an nRF52840 to the Echo directly. If you go with the Raspberry Pi route we suppose you may not need any AVS code running on the Pi, but have it talk to your own custom Alexa Skill. We are not an expert on Alexa Skills and don't know if there are inherent limitations here in the same way there is with Alexa Gadgets. Otherwise there are consumer products in the market now that may cover your need. There is the "Amazon Echo Button", and some others that may require an additional hub. If you have an ecosystem already, such as Hue, you might have the hub already and can add a button through this.
Ádám Fodor
Ádám Fodor 9 днів тому
@Nordic Semiconductor Not really, but I actually tried running AVS on a Pi a few years back. I have an Echo now and some wifi smart bulbs. I want to trigger them physically (with a button) and a battery powered nrf52 module would be the heart of this BLE push button. And I need a ble-wifi bridge which listens for the wake and signal of the nrf module and communicates the bulbs directly or maybe trigger Alexa routines somehow (via wifi?). When I first saw gadgets I thought I can skip this bridge and send BLE signal directly to my Echo, but I understand it's not possible.
Nordic Semiconductor
Nordic Semiconductor 9 днів тому
@Ádám Fodor You mean setting up a raspberry pi like described here? developer.amazon.com/en-US/docs/alexa/avs-device-sdk/raspberry-pi-script.html This might work as a proof-of-concept, but I'm not sure if it's suitable for an end product. There are other ways to connect to the Alexa ecosystem, but Nordic does not have any examples for this unfortunately. You can look here for more details: developer.amazon.com/en-US/alexa/devices/connected-devices There might also be something useful here: github.com/aws/amazon-freertos/tree/main/projects/nordic/nrf52840-dk/ses/aws_demos Hope this helps!

@Nordic Semiconductor Thank you for your answer! I will try another solution like nrf -> rpi/esp32 bridge -> Alexa. But I'm not sure if this way will work or not.
Nordic Semiconductor
Nordic Semiconductor 11 днів тому
Unfortunately a skill session cannot be triggered from the Gadget. The user needs to trigger it by speaking with Alexa, which means that use cases such as a doorbell is not currently possible within the Alexa Gadgets framework.

If you bought our nRF52840 Dongle you can't use that as it doesn't have an onboard debugger, is uses an open USB bootloader which allows it to program without a debugger. Out of curiosity. I have recently got a few of those Nordic DKs. The toolchain is no doubt Nordic, as in complex and intimidating. I have a suggestion. When doing stuff like printk, would it not be nice if there would be like a window that shows what is printed? Sorry, i hail from ESP32 and other chipsets and develop commonly in IDF. They have that feature. It be nice if Nordic also implemented something similar. That way a simple Hello World does in fact show something. Now i just have to image it works... Debugging same thing. It stops somewhere in Init.c but never anywhere else.

Most of our examples print logging data over UART by default, and you should be able to see prints if you open an UART terminal (like PuTTY) with the DKs COM port and the default baud rate of 115200. It's also possible to configure the example to use the RTT as a backend so that you can see the printed data in the debug terminal of SES or in SEGGERs RTT Viewer. If you have further questions on how to do any of this, please create a ticket on DevZone and our tech support team will help you out devzone.nordicsemi.com

So calling this from MicroPython or CircuitPython should be easy. There's a single entry point (run_classifier) that just takes a very simple structure of data - if you have a way of interacting with native code this should be straightforward. E.g. OpenMV is already doing this (with MicroPython).

8 symbols per bit? Perhaps the vice versa: 8 bits per symbol? Otherwise the grass is too green in your town ;-)
Dave Thompson
Dave Thompson 2 місяці тому
It’s all about extending the range (distance) within a fixed power limit. So yes, using more of the time band and sending data slower. Seems like the SNR or possibly multipath variation is that much worse that they need to do this, to get a signal at all. The coding methods you suggest probably require higher SNR than they have. See p169 of the Bluetooth spec www.mouser.it/pdfdocs/bluetooth-Core-v50.pdf Not a poor choice more like a trade off at extended range.
Oid Polar
Oid Polar 2 місяці тому
@Dave Thompson 8 modulations per bit? It sounds like a huge waste of carrier band. Encoding Reed - Solomon is even better. I'm in doubt it's implemented so badly. I feel you are very much wrong
Dave Thompson
Dave Thompson 2 місяці тому
No, I think it’s correct. 8 rf symbols on the physical layer are required to send 1 bit in long range mode. Or you could say 0.125 bits per symbol.

Really happy with the v2. It is every thing the Pi Pico isn't. It is one of the best boards for the Arduino IDE, a great tool to teach C++ in the classroom with fun projects. Request for V2.1 PRO version: include NEOPixels instead of regular LED's, the tiny 2x2mm ones from the Kitronik Halo HD are perfect for that, and give a 20 pin row of 2,54mm spaced holes as alternative for the crocodile header. Slightly zig-zag, like Pimoroni does so it even works with non soldereded header pins.

The following measurements are done at 40 ms connection interval, and with serial output on the sample being disabled (developer.nordicsemi.com/nRF_Connect_SDK/doc/latest/nrf/app_power_opt.html#disabling-serial-logging). I'm looking to use the nF52840 to a shade application. It does also supports NFC to Homekit?
Nordic Semiconductor
Nordic Semiconductor 2 місяці тому
@Jonny Emilio Matuichuk the nRF52840 Dongle supports NFC, but it requires a bit of modification. You need to add a NFC antenna on P0.09 og P0.10. You can learn more: developer.nordicsemi.com/nRF_Connect_SDK/doc/latest/nrf/ug_thread_configuring.html?highlight=thread and infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/struct_sdk/struct/sdk_thread_zigbee_latest.html For more help, we recommend to reach out to our tech support team on DevZone devzone.nordicsemi.com

@Nordic Semiconductor Thanks for replay. I m also wondering if can I integrate this with this NFC integration with the nRF52840 dongle, or if there is a SKD that support a QR Code scanning to integrate via thread?

Hi Jonny. Yes, the nRF52840 supports NFC and HomeKit. Please note the nRF52840 can only operate an NFC tag and not as an NFC reader.

@Nordic Semiconductor Thanks. I already found how to use sniffer v3.1.0 with the Wireshark. To be honest, it was so hard :)
Nordic Semiconductor
Nordic Semiconductor 5 місяців тому
Yes, you can use the nRF Sniffer for Bluetooth Low Energy with nRF52 DK (PCA10040). The nRF Sniffer for 802.15.4 protocols is only supported by nRF52840 DK or nRF52840 Dongle.

@Nordic Semiconductor Ah... yes I missed to read that part, selecting specific device throwing all the transaction data. Thanks.

Hello Adam, you would need to choose an advertising device in Wireshark to be able to see the packages that are sent between peripheral and central in a connection. There is a tab in the Sniffer interface, look for "all advertising devices". If the connection is encrypted, and you got a passkey, you would have to write that in the connection process. Have you seen this about common sniffing action on our infocenter: infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/ug_sniffer_ble/UG/sniffer_ble/sniffing_actions.html If you have more questions, please reach out to our tech support team on DevZone: devzone.nordicsemi.com

Note: the video states at 0:40 that the ICCID is the top two lines of numbers on the SIM. However, the ICCID is actually all 3 lines on the SIM, a total of 18 digits.
Nordic Semiconductor
Nordic Semiconductor 2 місяці тому
@Kuba Buczak that might have changed the way it's printed then. It should be the first 18 digits.
Kuba Buczak
Kuba Buczak 2 місяці тому
@Nordic Semiconductor No, that not the case for my card. I suppose that iBasis changed the way how it's printed. On mine there are 3 lines 6 digits in each. On yours I can see through blur that first two lines are longer. I checked - registration it didn't work with two lines I had to put digits from all 3 lines.
Nordic Semiconductor
Nordic Semiconductor 2 місяці тому
@Kuba Buczak yes, all iBasis card have 3 lines. As Heidi mention at approx 0:37: you need the first two lines.
Kuba Buczak

On my iBasis card it was also 3 lines, a total of 18 digits
Nordic Semiconductor
Nordic Semiconductor 5 місяців тому
The ICCID on the iBasis SIM card is the first two lines of numbers printed on the SIM plus a check digit and check filler (F) that is not printed on the card, to make a total of 20 digits. You can check this by using the AT command %XICCID to read out the ICCID. nRF Cloud activates the SIM cards using only the first 18 digits of the ICCID, i.e the portion of the ICCID printed on the card and therefore easily accessible to the user. This is why it's said like this in the video.
