Tbh you can’t compare the two games 1 to 1, as the context is vastly different: - when Bioshock came out you were presumably a teen or even a kid - it was a real next gen game in 2007 with insane gameplay and graphics Fast forward to 2023: - we’re already in our mid 30s, we’re difficult to awe and please - this style of gameplay and graphics has been done countless times already

What I hate about the Hitman series are the AI. They're either incredibly dumb or just plain cheating.

What youre saying logically makes no sense to me. Every game that has big scores bores me. Ive never been interested in games that use big scores or big numbers because it feels pointless to me. I didnt even realize theres damage numbers in vampire slayers, because its just mass killing shit so the numbers dont matter. Ive always like runescape which only has tiny damage numbers like 1 or 2

There is no prescribed formula for creating a great game, so, i'd take issue with the idea of needing to adopt/iterate upon these paradigms. these associations can be helpful to convey meaning to the player, but i'd consider them just another tool

As I make my RPG I try to keep all of this in mind. I’ve set up many different goals such as killing all the enemies in a given room, progressing the story, or even being able to perfect the attack mechanic. These are all short term goals I think so long term goals would be getting to a higher level, upgrading your weapon, or buying new weapons that will outweigh your upgraded one.

I was off work for the day once and was standing surrounding waiting for my ride when I got to thinking about these same elements. I had an epiphany. Earth = Solids Water = Liquids Air/Wind = Gases Fire = Plasma The four basic elements are the four states of matter.

All good points -- I do think it reveals in some games mentioned, like God of War, that they were designed with the higher difficulty levels in mind. I recently completed a hard mode playthrough of that game and every little stat boost and bonus felt so satisfying because the fights are so hard. I think pattern recognition also becomes a part of this build up. Sure, your POWER might be about as high from the start as it ever will get, but your SKILL and knowledge of the enemies is what improves. Especially when you go up against Sigrun and finally after thirty tries know her patterns well enough to pull off essentially a no-damage kill. Brilliant. But I only felt this when going back and playing on the harder mode.

First time I played it, I didnt used substances, was a moralist, got a good ending, was saying sorry a lot. I played it with the decision that I would personally make, myself being an alcoholic, I wanted to change that part when playing as Harry... Got the good ending, the phasmid blew me away. The whole experience was directed to us, the player, as personal as we can experienced it. Im considering quitting substances.

Cause it's rather intuitive to use elements we all know worldwide, regardless of language. Other have use the Phoenix as a healer on top of damage

Funny thing, Brotato (and I guess any bullet heaven game could work for that purpose) has become the perfect "study season game" for me. It's simple and flashy, demanding little time investment and not having any complex story to follow (or a story at all). Since there isn't much meta progression compared to any given roguelite (thinking of Hades here), I feel completely satisfied after a single run. It elicits my brain to disconnect with, well, brainless fun. Even though I love richer gaming experiences, sometimes simple is better. Beyond that, what a great video this is. Packed with information and useful insights, as always. Keep it up!

The Borderlands games counteracted the inflated damage numbers problem by just changing values from reading as 2,300,000 to 2.3M.

A series that does a stellar job at putting a twist on a classic system is the Like a Dragon RPGs! Having "homeless guy" and "cabbie driver" as RPG jobs is genius, you have to actually use each job for a while to notice "oh, so this is supposed to be a mage" lol

8:50 I wish you touched more on the idea that video games didn't invent these associations - they run deeper than even the elements. Grasslands are safe places because you can see predators coming. Dark woods are dangerous because you can't. Most animals know this instinctively, and we're no exception. Our sense of primal danger is not based on the media we experience, though it can be reinforced by them. Swamps have been full of stench, poisonous plants and biting insects since long before humans existed, let alone video games. Dragons exist in the cultural psyche precisely because they're scary. They combine things we instinctually fear -- big teeth, big claws, giant bat wings, fire. We didn't learn that from video game conventions. This is also true of the elements, to a degree (though I haven't finished the video yet and you might touch on this): while you said they're "scientifically nonsense", they're actually a reasonable proxy for the phases of matter (solid=earth, gas=air, liquid=water, fire=....fire). And these abstractions are not just an outdated paradigm, we STILL experience the world this way. We don't pour glasses of Dihydrogen Monoxide, even though that is a more precise elemental paradigm than "water". We don't burn ourselves on exothermic oxidation reactions.
