why you decided to use epoxy compound this time? it does better than clay?
@LifeofClay27 днів тому
Some cured polymer clay for example a texturing tool reacts from the plasticizer that leech out on the surface of a raw clay overtime, making it weaker and crumble. Whereas, epoxy don't and not affected by the plasticizer at all.

Thank you for sharing! That's an amazing sculpt, very inspiring. I might give this a try myself soon :) However, as someone researching cephalopod suction cups I cant help but point out two minor mistakes regarding the squid anatomy. The 8 smaller appendages are called the "arms", while the word "tentacle" is reserved for the 2 longer appendages with the suckers at the end, on the tentacular club as you mentioned. These tentacles are used for rapidly grabbing prey that are out of their arms' reach and bringing them closer. Additionally, while often described in literature as being made up of chitin, this is merely an outdated assumption. Chromatography has shown chitin presence in the ring is very unlikely. Instead, the sucker teeth rings are made up of a protein family called "suckerin", which consists of similar building blocks as proteins commonly found in insects. I also have a question. When painting before baking you use pigment powder. What is the difference you experienced between using pigment and regular acrylic paints in this part of the process? Again, lovely video and lovely sculpture. Subscribed and looking forward to seeing more from you!
@LifeofClayМісяць тому
thank you so much my friend, especially for the added clarification and updated information regarding this amazing creature. And regarding your question about the painting method, pigment powder shading adds undershade or what I call "precoloring" and it gives your eyes a color guide on how to top it with the final paints which is also dilluted and keep every layer translucent until you get the final color you desire. it can be applied in different color combinations or layers too.

Kenji, my friend!! As you know I've already recreated this beautiful monster already and sold him a while back (with full credit of design and idea given to you), but I didn't do the eyeball the same way you did.... The iris in particular. I just painted the iris onto a smooth surface. It looked great, but it felt like it was missing something. Anyways, I am currently working on a new eyeball monster of my own design and decided to use your iris design and have sculpted in the grooves and the "veiny" features. I will share the finished product with you when it's completed. You're always showing me new techniques to add to my sculpting and are criminally under rated and deserve many more subs.

Looks better than all "professional" museum models I have seen of Architeuthis dux! Interestingly, in its deep sea habitat it seems to have a beautifully shiny silver color - at least in the footage recorded by Kubodera and his team in 2012. Great work!
