How many garden designers would come into a space and divide and relocate what's there to use what the homeowner already has? Love this project ... simple, approachable, great lessons. Thanks for sharing.

It's so true about moving things ... or if volunteers pop up, that's where they need to stay ... for new gardeners. I'm learning that no, I can transplant things and right some of my earlier mistakes. Always learning!

I try to do my own leaf mulch each year, but it is predominantly oak. I mulch it with a riding mower. Some I scatter in the fall. Some I pile up in the “back 40” and use in the spring. Is there any concern with the high degree of oak?

We sell the DeWit brand at Northwind (we don't ship unfortunately). It's available online for about $100 from a few different retailers. The key, for me, is the long handle which saves wear and tear on the back.

I consider myself a steward of the environment and especially my large garden. I have never used toxic chemicals and pesticides. I have failed at finding any answer to killing the huge invasion of the voracious Red Lily Beetle in my large garden. I have over 100 Lilies of many types and varieties. Hand picking is not possible( I have tried), and Neem oil every few days was a negligible success on a few plants. I have gone to every state site, read most of the published articles, contacted garden sites and the sites of each chemical company such as Bayer re their pesticides. No answers. Do you know of anything that can be used as a soil drench now to kill the inground larvae? ( I would have used something sooner had I found any answer). I dread removing all of my much loved Lilies, but fear that I too, as every other New York gardening friend has already done, must dig them out and destroy these bulbs. Help🙁
@ericjorgensen8028
@ericjorgensen8028 15 днів тому
They are truly annoying little creatures. Maybe beneficial nematodes added to the soil will help?? Or...I think we may need to wait for nature to keep them in check. Since their population seems to be booming sooner or later something will start eating them or a disease will knock them back...we hope. Until then I'll keep squishing... Another thought. Deer spray or similar. Maybe spraying the lilies with something distasteful will make them stop ... I may try that with deer spray or Cayenne pepper....hmmmm

Have you tried attracting predatory wasps and beetles to destroy the larvae?

Habitat and wildlife were so much healthier when everything was native. I have talked with others about only native and some only look at what’s pretty. The truth is native plants are much prettier than non native/invasive and wildlife and pollinators increase the health of your property when everything is native. People don’t understand this until they watch it in action.

I tried the Dutch push pull hoe, found I prefer my stirrup hoe. Highly recommend trying the stirrup hoe. Can find one fairly inexpensively at hardware stores. I ended up investing in both the large and small versions from AM Leonard (they offer replacement blades too).

@RoyDiblik of course you're right. I have both types of hoes, both have long handles, both are effective. I've found a stirrup or D hoe just easier and faster. Mine has push/pull action and is easy to sharpen. Got it from AM Leonard. Replacement blades available too.

Does the C.albicans tend to stay green though a Zone 8a/b winter? I have an oak tree in the front yard that I planted some C.pensylvanica under, and enjoyed that it has a little bit of green during the Autumn and Winter. I'd like to add more in the coming weeks, but I'll scatter in some C.albicans if I can find it at the nursery.

Hi Roy, this is fascinating. I have a question about having two Echinacea species together. I had been told that they will hybridize and then there will just be the hybrid. Is that true? I was thinking of using E. tennesseensis and E. purperea in the same planting.

Hi Roy, thanks for your sharing. I like to know how to plan a long and narrow garden strip without beeing too choppy and without choosing only few plants. My garden strip is 4-6 ft by 85ft on a slope along a curvy road.... please share some thoughts about long and narrow strip
@RoyDiblik
@RoyDiblik 15 днів тому
I'd generally suggest 5-6 plants total with 60% short grasses (Sporobolus, Molinia 'Poul Petersen') and then intermingle the other 4-5 plants (Salvia 'Wesuwe', Stachys 'Hummelo', Solidago 'Golden Fleece').

Hey, Roy, very interesting to see how you do this in advance on paper! Did map all the existing perennials last year? English is not my native language, but I understand that you imagine how plants will develop. I am very curious how you make a difference on the drawing between the mapped existing plants and the new planned plants. Love your style of gardening!
@pamelah6431

Thanks Roy! As you know, Piet is famous for “colorizing” his designs. Do you ever do that to help get a feel for the overall plan of a garden?
@RoyDiblik
@RoyDiblik 15 днів тому
Piet's design drawings are works of art! For me, it's too time consuming and can sometimes be misleading for the client and doesn't take into account the seasonality of blooms and colors.
