I actually disagree that the newest history books are the best sources. You forgot about modern ideological contamination. It's become increasingly popular for "historians" to shove their personal biases into modern history books and focus on things that are far less relevant to the material but much more relevant to modern ideology. As an example, putting a huge focus on racial aspects and emotional issues revolving around that rather than just discussing the events. In my country (United States), there is also an odd trend of whitewashing the negatives of communism or actions of specific areas of the world from history but putting a big overemphasis on the negatives of the west or specific disliked religions (Christianity) instead, while making excuses for other specific religions (I won't name them so UKposts doesn't delete my post, but it should be obvious which I mean) including outright pretending they weren't involved when they clearly were. Another example would be the giant focus on the 6 million jews who died in the holocaust, which barely mentioning the other 7 million people who were killed at the same time . .or the nearly 20 million Christians who were slaughtered between WWI and WWII which is literally not even mentioned in the history books we provide to our public schools. So, I wouldn't say the newest history books are the best sources. Some of the worst sources I've ever read are in fact the newest history books. I would say anything written after maybe the year 2,000 is probably worthless. Anything written after the 60's is also of decreasing value since that's when Marxism started to spread in the west. At least here in the U.S.. I don't disagree with the idea of what you're saying though. . .but I think it needs an asterisk because ideological corruption is so common now in academia.
