Quick question. Why do you have a 20ohm resistor between the transistor (MPSA42) emitter side and ground? thank you!

To make easy to monitor the emitter current.

You’re a freaking genius, how the hell did you figure it was the VNA out amplitude. And how did you figure the amps input limit. I’m 59 yrs old I wish I had your brain. Great video 👍. I have a nanoVNA and I don’t remember why I bought it hahaha.

Hi, very informative video. I have similar doubt while making the current source. I'm using a FET and op-amp for feedback method to generate a constant current source. It's showing the same problem with different load. Can you suggest how to rectify that? It will be very helpful for me.

Without a sprectrum anylizer. If my amplifier has a nice linear waveform like that, then the imd would be at least decent? Or the two not related? Ive got a old heathkit station monitor similar to the kenwoods.

You really can’t tell linearity accurately with a two tone waveform.

I imagine that capacitance of a diode like a bridge for cars if the bridge is too narrow it cannot pass any car ;) Sorry it is just my imagination ;) By the way it is a shame that nobody talks about VHF/UHF components, every video i watch it is always about basic staff. Never something at least for the people who has some knowledge already but wish to know more... but maybe I would like to have too much from the internet. In VHF very strange but interesting things happen. I have noticed that Toshiba has nice diodes with low capacitance for VHF applications but forward voltage is quite high like 1 v, I can't find any diode with low capacitance and low forward voltage like at least 0,3 V (like kind of a germanium diode).
@w2aew3 дні тому
This is one of the main reasons that PIN diodes are used for switches at high frequency as they have much lower capacitance than junction or Schottky diodes when reverse biased.
@grzesiek1x3 дні тому
I am looking for a diode for example that I could use as a simple detector but for high frequency. I mean something similar what it is used for simple AM receiver circuit but with components for very high frequency. I am not sure if it's even possible but I have seen some old circuits for aircraft models and there they used 27 MHz and special diodes like gex34 which p4obbaly I won't find anywhere these days. 🤔
@grzesiek1x3 дні тому
I meant 27 MHz carrier wave from transmitter and as a receiver reaaally simple citcuit with gex34 diode as a detector and two transistors and a relay. I am teying to figure out a modern circuit like that one with modern components as they used probably also germanium transistors for this also.

So the question is: Is a tantalum capacitor also an *electrolytic* capacitor? Wiki says yes. There are two basic types of tantalum capacitors - wet and dry electrolyte types. Please don't confuse the natives out here! ;-)
@w2aew3 дні тому
Yes, both are electrolytic. Here is an explaination from a major manufacture of caps. www.tdk.com/en/tech-mag/electronics_primer/9#:~:text=An%20electrolytic%20capacitor%20is%20a,supply%20circuits%20and%20similar%20applications.

Interesting video! It is very easy - but I have not made good active RF mixer - there was parasitic generation or something else (for example big time constant in base of an oscillator). I had good results only with passive mixers - diode or a mosfet switch.

I managed to do it, although the pattern displayed on my Smith chart was a very tight circle, so the resistance didn't change much away from 50 ohms as I scrolled through the resistance. Quite glad about this, since it was a 50 ohm cable! I'll try again with a piece of 75ohm cable. Thank you for that. One comment: in your videos, you very often "take" values to perform operations on them. It's unnecessary, and in British English, "take" can be interpreted as "subtract". This first time I heard it, I thought "take it from what?" Hope this is useful. 🙂 Thanks again.

Hi Alan, I'm asking in this video since I'm not sure how else to reach you. What is the main difference between a dedicated RF signal generator and a function generator (AWG)? Is it perhaps that the RF signal generator can more easily generate VHF and above frequencies and very weak signals strength, whereas the typical funciton generator generates relatively lower frequencies compared to the RF generator and is and would tipically require external attenuators for RF work? Is there really a difference between say a 14MHz sine generated by an RF generator vs a funciton generator? Would you considering covering this in a video? Many thanks, Alex M0OOV
@w2aew3 дні тому
You’ve got the major differences. Internally they are quite different.

For an emitter follower, it helps to stabilize the collector current with two additional transistors. That way the B-E voltage is constant, the gain is closer to 1, and the already low distortion is even lower.
