As a GenXer, before streaming if you wanted to rewatch a series you liked you had to buy the DVD sets for $20-60 for a single season. To get a whole run of a show, either you laid out the cash or hoped it would air in reruns somewhere on cable, double-lucky if it was aired in order or didn’t start over again half-way through the run (looking at you, Adult Swim). It wasn’t that long ago. People have really gotten used to getting entertained for free, or as part of a bundle. Even now Amazon sells seasons of shows you can’t find generally available to watch for the same price. And then you’re paying for ONE season of ONE show. If it’s something you’ll watch over and over, totally worth it. So maybe it’s a bit of a generational thing - comparatively, it’s a good deal for something I watch as often as I rewatch these videos. Personally, I do want to see international hauntings in places I can’t afford to travel to, or learn about exotic or fancy food I’ll never try; it’s called living vicariously. Also, I would love to see more crew involvement akin to Dirty Jobs.

The term parasocial has been tossed around quite a bit surrounding this event. I think for me, at least, it was more about being relatable. We had sort of an equal ground during buzzfeed days, so to speak; workers for a company, just having fun with your friends and making the best of it. Watcher was formed, and while creating content is still hopefully fun for you guys, now money is a bigger focus. The employee becomes the company. The disconnect begins. When the announcement came about the new platform, it felt like every decision that gets made at work, by an entity larger than us that decides our fates. Another paid holiday gone, time and a half slashed to time and a dollar, hours trimmed to nothing so the boss can get a bonus for being under a certain amount. I didn’t feel like it was a personal betrayal because I thought I knew you better than that or something, but I did feel a loss of something enjoyable being corrupted. I don’t know, because I’m on one end of the screen, but maybe the company doesn’t have to feel like a business? When I watch Cohh, Game Grumps, Jacksepticeye, all my hermits from Hermitcraft, I don’t feel disjointed from that. Last thing I’ll add; the apology was pretty solid. At times I felt a script was being read to me that maybe wasn’t your own words, but I hope the sentiment remains. Maybe this event will be humbling, and care will be taken to bridge the gap of corporate to employee, and feel like creators to an audience again.

I really want to believe this is genuine. At face value its really not a bad script (yes its absolutely scripted but thats not a bad thing), its straightforward, they actually directly apologize for specific things, all that. Buuut this reads so aggressively to me as saving face. I cant explain exactly why but, like, the absolute refusal to say anything remotely controversial, like Shane and Ryan won't defend their friend steven who got the most aggressive targeted hate in the comments despite having a relatively small platform compared to them. (Im also not a steven fan either but lets be honest some of the comments were a bit much towards him). I know i said scripted apologies arent bad, but this felt,,, off, like it was written by a PR team. They didnt directly acknowledge the privilege they have and how that informed a lot of the bad taste, i just dont feel like i can watch this and understand WHY they know this was a bad look, it seems like they just know people didnt like it and are repeating what those people said. Again this is a fine apology and as far as youtube controversies go this really isnt terrible, but im just having a hard time believing that if this didnt blow up and if it didnt get as much backlash (even if they still got exposed to the same exact ideas) that this would be uploaded at all. I get the vibe they dont actually understand why people are upset, they just want them to stop being upset. Which yes yes i know youtubers are not our friends and this is a business and their entrepreneurs and all that. Ive been getting a rank finance bro stink off this channel from the start, but its still a bit disappointing having that confirmed, yknow?
