To help recover accuracy, after the rough corner detection, use both ends of an edge and keep the outside points found by extrapolation. Rubbersheet the image moving these points to a square before profiling. They would be aligned much better for matching. I think humans actually do it this way. Even if the puzzle was not cut to this grid, it would still work as long as the interior pieces touch four. I would have labeled the pieces. It would have been cool for you to show the profiles of actual pieces that matched and didn't match, correctly and incorrectly. 58x69 I presume.
