Well it's a strange story. First it's based on the Julian kalender. When they changed to Gregorian kalender they added 11 days to december. Before, If I got it right, they celebrated they adapted the Lucia eve as it was the shortest day each year or the longest if you live in southern hemispfere. But it turned. When they added 11 days the longest day was moved to 21th. The 24th or 25th was 12 days from Lucia that was the great hedonian festival. Eastern ortodox church celebrate Epiphany when Jesus was baptized and manifested himself at first time as the main event. The way to open it seems to be either each 2nd day with start first december. One site suggested two calendrar to get max out of it. Or you can start by opening first at Lucia Eve (12th december 13 is the day after Lucia Eve) to get the 12 th at Cristmas Eve if you start open it at the day of Lucia (13th). You can embrace the Epiphany and start opening it the Christmas eve (24) and reach the 12th at the 6th of January Ephipany eve or 25th and reach the 12th at the 7th of january.
