The only way they could go back to a gold standard now is if they fully crashed the world economy and hit the reset button. There really isn't enough gold in the world for the US economy vs. the amount needed for currency circulation. We outpaced the insurable "reserve" amount decades ago. Supposedly we still have more than the rest of the world but audits haven't been disclosed in a long time. A gold crypto currency is really just a token, not crypto.

What you also need to think about is, Yes suppose Gold is now the standard again, what's going to happen to the value of gold? Suppose you're an investor, then of course you want gold to worth more... but any basic economist will be concerned with the effects of supply and demand. Now the demand of gold will be high since it is now the standard, but so will the supply, or the production of it. So how are you going to, predict the new equalibrium in relation to the current one. As investors we hope to have some kind of mechanism of determining that.

Suppose you are able to hoard all the gold somehow...Where is the gold going to be stored? How are they going to be protected if other than by force? Power IS standard and always will be, not gold, power is derived from military capabilities, technological advantages, manufacturing capabilities, resources... military stands paramount, but it's really the integration of all that. It's what gives the USD its value. Having wealth but no means to protect it is nothing. All the variable can shift of course, what you think the super powers are doing right now? The right questions to ask is, what do they stand to benefit if gold re-become the standard? Talking about from a technical persepctive the advantages of gold as a medium of exchange, one must also talk about the strategy the big players are going to take in the coming decade or century.
