This video about the history of 47 Ronin reminds me of a Japanese movie that reflects to this historical presentation: Swords of Vengeance (The Fall of Ako Castle) 1975.

As a gaijin I thought the shorter wakisashi was used for the seppuku ritual, not the longer katana... Thank you for teaching me something.

I very much enjoyed this video. Thank you, Shogo-san, for answering a question I have often asked myself. Your voice is very pleasant to hear, and the words are so well spoken and informative! I wanted to share my thoughts regarding the added sound effects whenever a new text appears on the screen. I perceive these sound effects as noise, and I must admit that they distract me from the spoken words. I also admit that I am challenged by issues of mindfulness! Likewise, I do not wish for this minor critique (i.e. my noise) to distract from the fact that this is excellent content!

Shogo is so right. The garden js truly a different feeling altogether. Time almost slows, and if you just relax you feel like youve entered a whole different world. Its so enjoyable and serene, truly a reset of the mind in the best possible way.

I really like how you bring up the logistical reasons behind these traditions. I never would have thought about how hard lighting was hundreds of years ago. I remember seeing a similar reasoning for kabuki performer makeup as well.

I had practiced Shotokan many years in Miami Fl. USA with a Japanese gentleman and one day I ask him about the "taking off the shoes" thing. He said, cleanliness and also religious reason. When I asked about the religious reason, he said, "not bring evil spirits into home". It makes a lot of sense that prior to most if not all civilizations knowledge and understanding of microbiology that you might put 2 and 2 together to get bring in shoes get sick = evil spirit caused it?

What West wrongly compare Samurai to knight. But knights are mostly from 1000 to 1300 ac and the samurai are mostly 200 to 400 years later so in Europe at that time the battlefield was dominated from firearms, so sword fight is not common anymore at that time
