Lol, it's so fitting that this popped up in my feed again this weekend. A friend of mine got me some gigs with an artist she's working with down in Nashville. We'd played together many times before, including our own cocktail duo, so I figured she knew my skillset pretty well. Turns out the gigs were on keys, which I haven't practiced regularly since we played together last in 2019. I was panicked as all hell as my Kurzweil pc88 was out for repair. By the grace of God, I was able to borrow a friend's rig, learn the music, show up, and throw down. Luckily, it went better than Adam's off-broadway experience, but I was so completely wracked with anxiety over it. I'm a drummer and bassist by trade, so trying to fake my way as a Nashville-caliber keys player was difficult, to say the least. Still, we made it work, and they hired me for their next string of shows up here in Michigan. Just goes to show that being a professional musician is 50/50 hard work and luck 😂

Here's how a jam band handles a colossal F-up: everyone plays a big, f-ed up, crazy dissonant chord completely out of time, then one person plays a main riff of the song. The other band members join to play the riff (maybe twice to get everyone in) and then they continue the song with big smiles like "we meant that". Crude, but effective.

Original progression is nice, level one is the not better and not worse, level 2 is amazing, everything after that just progresses to get more and more garbage with each level. This isn't music anymore, this is just noise that you call theory... Nobody can tell me that they listened to this level 7 progression and found it fitting. This just sounds like a beginner playing random chords and not knowing anything about melody

unfortunately, it's impossible to promote traditional and conservative thinking in a cool and modern way. when by definition you want people to have less freedom you simply cannot motivate it by showing it as "cool". being conservative is not about having fun.

The film not being about loving music is not a bad thing about the movie. Being upset with that would be like being upset with a movie about domestic violence. These things don't happen everywhere, and people ideally love one another rather than act terribly and do terrible things. But, as someone who loves music, and someone who has dealt with horrible conductors, I simply see what the movie is trying to say and do not mind it. Also... I am honestly willing to bet you most people who see this movie do not think all of jazz is like this movie. It is very obviously, even within the movie's self-contained context, a BAD situation involving BAD people to an extreme and unusual degree.
