Fond memories of these, one system had an attached non-DEC tape drive. I worked alongside a guy called Denis, known to all as Den - he (or we) could put in a 6250 tape and the LCD on the front would say "HI DEN", always made me chuckle

There's a great sim on Enigma World Code group. Got a digital copy of an original k buch for the m4 model. Silent Hunter 3 has never been so realistic since learning to use it.

Would be nice to see interviews with the actual creators rather than this book promo. I cant recommend the book either, it was so full of errors I returned it.

I was initially confused what Lyons was referring to, as a lot of places have a Lions Club and I thought it was that: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lions_Clubs_International

Tape drive in a draw may sound clever, and it takes up less space. But when the tech has to figure out why a tape will not load they lose their first most valuable troubleshooting tool, observation ! PDP-11/45 was my favorite machine to work on as a tech. And knowing it as well as I do provided me with a fun career. DEC BADGE # 7636. By the way, I have a DEC magtape of the ASCII images from 1974 or so. Don't know which computer museum to send it to. Including Spock holding the Enterprise model.

Born in late '81 and I can just about recall using a BBC micro in school. There was a game and I can't remember the name - I think it involved hexagons or cells that you needed to capture or invade. Hopefully that rings a bell for someone. The computer that really sticks in my mind was the Archimedes. A favourite memory of mine was of our primary school head teacher showing us the game Lemmings .

Didn't the graph showing the 10 month break in reading u-boat codes/transmissions and tonnage sunk correspond to a huge increase in u-boat construction and commisioning? Can someone explain how enigma/lorentz code breaking knocked 2 years off of the war, its often parroted but never with a follow up explanation.

Its self explanatory really. If you know your enemy's intentions, dispositions and inner workings while he in return does not know your's then you are at a HUGE advantage.

Not sure why he kept using "added" when he mean "EORed". It's a computing audience and he not shy about using no more obscure terms like Chi-1 Chi-2, so why not just use EOR after explaining what a binary EOR operation is? Using the term "adding" easily confuses casual listeners.

Not only is this a fantastic, captivating piece of computer/wartime cryptanalysis, this guy is such a great technical communicator its almost possible to not realise how clear, terse effortless, succinct and cogent his communication style is. This was a true pleasure to listen to every syllable of this story. Everything was perfect: diction, dialogue, delivery, pacing, volume, technical explanations sparse but brilliant use of diagrams and photos, etc, etc, etc. A communication tour-de-force! BRAVO!!! Thank you for sharing such a wonderful effort!

All these ‘shortened the war by two years’ claims that circulate are bunk. They forget there were three wars being fought. The one all across the globe that millions were involved in and killed tens of millions. And the two that started in 1945. An enriched uranium bomb war. And a plutonium bomb war. The war in Europe was never going to go to spring 1947. If Germany had dominated central and western Europe in late summer 1945 the uranium and plutonium wars would have destroyed the cities of Germany in the fall of 1945.

This machine inspired me into a 25 yr career designing games. It was like magic to me, when that power switch went on, a portal into another world of endless possibilities. The commitment was huge, typing in Frogger code from a magazine. One misplaced semi-colon and it wouldn’t run. I could never understand how the likes of Revs and Elite could possibly fit into 32k of memory 😮

Thanks for that fascinating presentation. It is an injustice that none of those pioneers ( including Turing ) received any recognition during their lives due to secrecy of the work.
