It's the Atlantic Ocean actually, many countries got their trade from the Atlantic, even if the trade did not come from the Atlantic it would need to go through the Atlantic Ocean, a good demonstration of this is the German and British blockades issued and most importantly it caused the US to join the war, therefore the Atlantic is the most important and the Mediterranean didn't even come close.
